“Ice Pancakes” Found in Scotland

Yes, you read that correctly. “Ice pancakes” comparable in size to dinner plates were found floating on the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. These “pancakes” were found by The River Dee Trust, but can be and have been found in other rivers and open seas.

The biologist who found the “ice pancakes”, Jamie Urquhart, believes that the phenomenon occurred when foam floating on the water began to freeze at night. During the day, these discs softened around the edges and formed higher rims due to collisions. At night, they once again began to freeze and grow in size (BBC News).

While these “ice pancakes” were found on the River Dee at Brise in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, they usually form in rough seas around the Arctic and Antarctic (Daily Mail).
