5 Big Mistakes Made During Tornado Warnings

We’re beginning to enter into the “secondary” severe weather season across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. I hate using terms like “severe weather season” because, we can simply see severe weather any time of the year. We’ve seen events in January, April, June, and November; not to mention every month in between. But, that is not the point of this post.

So, what’s the point? www.jrn.com published a post on its website on April 26, 2014, just days before one of the most significant severe weather events of the year across the United States. The post gives the reader the 5 biggest mistakes made during tornado warnings. I’d have to say I agree with all of them.

1. Not taking tornado warnings seriously. This is especially true for this area. “We have rivers that will stop them.” “Tornadoes can’t go over hills.” “It won’t happen here.” Those are all things that are said almost on a daily basis that kills a meteorologist. Tornado warnings are issued for a reason; take cover.

2.  Not seeking shelter immediately. Basically, get your butt in gear during a tornado warning. Although the warning may last for 45 minutes, it could be on your doorstep much faster. Forecasting the speed of a storm is not an exact science.

3.  Looking out the window. The truth of the matter is, all you’re likely to see is rain. Often times tornadoes are obscured by heavy rain, making them impossible to see before it’s too late.

4. Not having a way to hear the warnings. We live in a day that this shouldn’t even be an issue. Smartphones use GPS technology to notify you of severe weather warnings. Local media will keep you informed of severe weather despite the backlash they receive all the time. Rely on outdoor warning sirens only if you are outdoors.

5. Taking Shelter in the wrong place. Learn where to take shelter. Take shelter in an interior room, closet, or bathroom in the lowest floor of your building. If in a mobile home, and you have plenty of time, try to leave the mobile home for more substantial shelter.

Take these steps to avoid the most common mistakes during tornado warnings. and it may just save your life during a tornado. Do yourself a favor and read the full article linked above.
