Late August Heat Continues

Real Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy,  Isolated Thunderstorms – High 90° / Tonight – Partly Cloudy; Muggy – Low 70°

Good afternoon, the upper-level ridge  that has brought us a dose of late August heat and humidity will continue will continue to dominate our weather over the next few days. Currently, southern Kentucky is seeing temperatures in the upper 80s along with dew points in the lower 70s. These high dew points will make it feel a bit warmer than it really is this afternoon with heat indices up to 100°.

Thanks to daytime heating, isolated thunderstorms have popped up just east of us today. Most of the shower and thunderstorm activity is staying east of I-65, but we can’t rule out a quick-hitting thunderstorm in Warren or Butler county this afternoon and evening. Any thunderstorms will produce brief heavy downpours in addition to lightning.

Thunderstorm activity in the area should diminish later this evening and partly cloudy skies will continue overnight. Another muggy night is in store as low temperatures drop to around 70°.

3pm 90º – 6pm 87º – 9pm 80º – 12am 76º – 3am 73º– 6am 70º

Tuesday 8/26 – Partly Cloudy, Stray Thunderstorm Possible – High 91° / Tue Night – Mostly Clear; Muggy – Low 68°

Tomorrow’s weather looks very similar to what we are seeing today. Upper-level ridging and high pressure will make for yet another day with high temperatures reaching the lower 90s under partly cloudy skies. Even though light winds will turn to the east tomorrow afternoon and usher in dew points a degree or two cooler, heat indices up to 100° are possible once again. Anyone else getting bored with this weather?

Daytime heating may fire off a few stray thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon, but precipitation coverage looks to be less than today due to capping in the atmosphere. This means a layer of warm air near the surface will inhibit air to rise and limit the lift storms need to fire.

Expect partly cloudy skies on Tuesday night with lows in the upper 60s.

Wednesday 8/27 –  Partly Cloudy, Isolated PM Thunderstorms – High 92° / Wed Night – Isolated Thunderstorms – Low 69°

On Wednesday, the ridge axis will shift a bit to the west allowing for isolated storms to fire along the edge of the ridge. Storms look to fire by Wednesday afternoon and persist through the night. Not everyone will see rain, but precipitation coverage will be a bit better than we’ve seen the past few days. Check out the latest run of the GFS predicting jet stream winds out of the northwest on Wednesday:

Outside of any thunderstorms, highs on Wednesday will be in the lower 90s with dew points approaching 70º.  Lows will drop into the upper 60s overnight.
