Heat Builds in Southern Kentucky

Real-Time Bowling Green Weather Regional Radar:

Today (8/21) – Mostly Sunny; Stray Thunderstorm Possible – High 94º / Thu Night – Partly Cloudy; Muggy – Low 73º

6am 73º – 9am 83º – 12pm 90º – 3pm 94º – 6pm 89º

Good morning, it is already warm across southern Kentucky with temps in the lower 70s before daybreak. We are currently seeing some clouds in the area, and these should decrease in coverage through the morning.

A very strong upper level ridge will begin to center itself across the eastern United States today, and this ridge will keep things very hot through the weekend. In addition to hot temperatures, winds out of the southwest will keep pushing moisture into the area meaning we could see some high heat indices.

Temperatures will reach the middle 90s this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. We could see a few pop-up thunderstorms this afternoon due to daytime heating but most of the activity should remain to our northeast.

We will be flirting with Heat Advisory criteria each afternoon over the next several days with heat indices of 100°-105°. Check out this chart showing how to derive a heat index value from the temperature and dewpoint. If you are going to be outdoors this week remember to drink lots of water, wear lightly colored clothing, and take lots of breaks.

Expect a very muggy night tonight with lows only falling in the lower to middle 70s under partly cloudy skies.

Fri – Mostly Sunny; Hot – High 96º / Fri Night – Partly Cloudy, Warm – Low 73º

The heat will continue on Friday as the upper level ridge remains parked in place over us. Temperatures will reach the middle 90s once again under mostly sunny skies. A stray thunderstorm could pop up during the afternoon, but chances look very low. Another muggy night is on tap Friday with lows in the 70s. Make sure you find a way to stay cool.

Sat – Mostly Sunny; Hot – High 95º / Fri Night – Partly Cloudy, Warm – Low 74º

Saturday will be a repeat of Friday’s weather. Temperatures will top out in the middle 90s once again and we will see no relief from the heat.

This ridge looks to dominate our weather through the weekend and into early next week. Hopefully this heat wave is summer’s last gasp and we can return to near normal temperatures by later next week.

That’s all I’ve got for this morning, be sure to stay cool over the next several days and keep up with @WxOrNotBG and @WarrenCountyWX for real-time weather updates.
