Strong Storms Possible Today

Real Time Regional Radar:

Today 8/19 – Isolated Thunderstorms – High 90° / Tonight – Strong Thunderstorms – Low 73°

If you’re an early commuter, keep your eyes peeled this morning…dense fog has enveloped much of the region.

Today’s weather will bring some more warm, humid conditions to the region. We’ll be placed in the warm sector of an approaching low pressure system. This will bring winds out of the south and southwest for most of the day. A cold front will begin to approach the region by the evening hours. Expect a high temperature around 90°.

I believe we may see some isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon hours, however, the bulk of the precipitation will likely hold off until this evening/tonight as the front draws closer. We may see a large cluster of thunderstorms form to the north of the region, then move southeast into our area.  The NAM simulated radar model below sends a nasty MCS across our proximity after sunset tonight:

A few of these storms may be strong to severe. Gusty wind, small hail, heavy rain, and vivid lightning will be most of the concern. The Storm Prediction Center is watching places just north of us.

Otherwise, you can expect mostly cloudy conditions outside of thunderstorms tonight. Lows will be right around 73°.

Wednesday 8/20 – Isolated Thunderstorms – High 94° / Wed Night – Scattered Thunderstorms – Low 72°

On Wednesday thunderstorms may be ongoing across the region to begin the day. These will gradually diminish as the morning wears on. We’ll expect partly cloudy skies across the region by noon. If partly cloudy skies rings true, then we’ll see a high temperature around 94°. The forecast is about as awesome as below:

Towards the evening hours thunderstorms will once again form to the north of the region. Right now there are questions surrounding the intensity of the storms due to lack of confidence in cloud cover. Strong storms will once again be possible if clods can clear out by the afternoon hours. I think the best coverage of storms will be east of I-65. Otherwise, lows will be right around 72°.

Thursday 8/21 – Partly Cloudy – High 93° / Thur Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 73°

Rain chances will greatly diminish on Thursday as high pressure begins to work into the region. This will put a bit of a lid on the atmosphere for the next few days. High pressure will continue to reinforce itself over the coming days. This could make for a few miserable days to move into WKU.

However, for Thursday, our conditions won’t be too bad. Partly cloudy skies will be the rule of the day after isolated morning showers move out of the region. Highs will remain in the low to mid 90s. Thursday night will remain calm in the weather department. You can expect partly cloudy skies with lows in the low to mid 70s.
