Surface high pressure will continue to dominate Bowling Green’s short term weather as this feature will track eastward towards the Mid-Atlantic Region. Winds will begin to shift more from the south as temperatures climb a degree or two warmer today.

Despite the warmer thermometer readings, dewpoint temperatures will remain in the lower 60’s as muggy conditions hold off one more day. In return, look for a slightly warmer, but pleasant summer day across southern Kentucky.  Lows tonight will dip into the mid 60’s under partly cloudy skies.

Sat – Mostly Sunny; Hot – High 93º / Sat Night – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Storms – Low 73º

The aforementioned surface high pressure will continue its eastward progression through the first part of the weekend. Winds will begin to shift more from the south as plenty of warmth and moisture works northward into the region. The hot and humid weather abruptly returns as temperatures soar into the lower 90’s. Dewpoint values in the upper 60’s will push heat index values into the mid-upper 90’s Saturday afternoon.

I don’t want it either…

Outside of the muggy conditions, we turn our attention to a cold front that will strengthen and approach from the northwest. The latest model guidance slows the progression of this front for much of the day before storm chances increase Saturday night. With that said, I think most activity will stick to our north through the evening hours before better chances arrive by Sunday. Overnight lows will be warm with temperatures in the lower 70’s.

Sun – Partly Sunny; Iso’d Strong-Severe Thunderstorms – High 94º / Sun Night – Sct’d Strong-Severe Thunderstorms – Low 70º

The second half of the weekend will offer a more unsettled weather pattern as the threat for severe weather looms. A strengthening upper level trough will dig through the Great Lakes Region as the associated low and surface cold front track through the Ohio Valley. The atmosphere will feature plenty of moisture, instability and shear for more organized severe weather.

The afternoon and evening hours seem to be the prime time for activity as the front edges closer to southern Kentucky. The latest from the SPC outlines much of the state under a slight (enhanced) risk for severe weather on Sunday.
