Storm Chances Ramp Up

Real Time Regional Radar:

————————————–

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy; Iso’d Storms – High 93º / Tonight – Mostly Cloudy; Sct’d Storms – Low 71º

3pm 93º – 6pm 89º – 9pm 82º – 12am 76º – 3am 72º – 6am 71º

The heat wave continues across much of the state as conditions are hot and muggy. Afternoon temperatures have climbed quickly today as thermometer readings will top out in the lower 90’s for Bowling Green.

The stubborn high pressure situated over the Carolina’s will begin to weaken as the chance for isolated showers and storms increase. The nice southwesterly flow that we’ve experienced over the past few days will continue as the atmosphere will become more unstable over the next 48 hours.

Any storm development today will be mainly diurnally driven, especially during the peak heating hours this afternoon. While no severe weather is expected, these pulse (pop-up) storms will be capable of producing brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Otherwise, look for mostly cloudy skies tonight with warm overnight lows.

I know…anything to stay cool.

Fri – Partly Sunny; Sct’d Storms – High 91º / Fri Night – Mostly Cloudy; Sct’d Storms – Low 70º

As we look to wrap up the work week, a weak cold front will try to gather itself before approaching the region by Friday night. Ahead of front, plenty of moisture will stream northward across southern Kentucky as instability rises along with additional lift. In return, the boundary will be the focal point for scattered storm development throughout the afternoon.

A look at the precipitable water values shows exactly how moist the atmosphere will become over the course of our Friday. Values will run toward 2.0” for much of Central and South-Central Kentucky as Bowling Green falls into this juicy category. While no severe storms are anticipated, primary threats with any development will be heavy rainfall, gusty winds and vivid lightning.

Scattered storms will linger into the evening hours as the front continues to track southeastward across the state. The slow moving cold front will finally push through the area late Friday night/early Saturday morning. The frontal passage will provide little relief temperature wise as overnight lows drop to around 70 degrees.

Sat – Partly Sunny; Iso’d Storms – High 86º / Sat Night – Mostly Cloudy; Mild – Low 69º

The weak surface low will continue to work through the area by Saturday as chances for scattered showers and storms persist through the morning hours. Temperatures will cool a tad bit into the mid-upper 80’s as we catch a slight break from the heat under partly sunny skies. Saturday night will feature mostly cloudy and calm conditions as mild temperatures hang tough.

As we look ahead, mother nature will keep that heat dial turned up. Sunday, highs will begin to rise back into the upper 80’s as the summer-time pop-up showers and storms will be possible through the afternoon hours. Models hint towards another weaker disturbance developing and tracking through by next mid-week as the heat and humidity make a return.
