Real-time radar:

Today 5/31 – Mostly Sunny / Isolated Showers & T-storms – High 88° / Tonight – Mostly Clear– Low 67°

Good morning everyone and Happy Saturday! Nothing but good news today so I’ll try to get straight to the point so we can all get on with enjoying the weekend. We didn’t see any rain yesterday in Bowling Green but I promise you there were plenty of showers and storms in the area. We dodged every single one of them throughout the day and it ended up being a warm and humid day outside. Expect much of the same for today.

Today will be another repeat forecast, highs in the mid and upper 80’s all across the region with the chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Dewpoints in the mid 60’s will keep us on the humid side but northeast winds are trying to bring those points down a little. A weak boundary that is draped across the area will likely be in our near vicinity and will provide a focal point for the formation of any precipitation. This boundary is slowly drifting southwest and once it does precipitation chances should diminish. Any developed cells of precipitation should drift off to the west with time and follow the boundary out of the area.

However, showers and thunderstorms shouldn’t be as extensive in coverage today for the overall area, but if it rains in Bowling Green none of that matters, right? Just keep an eye on the radar and exercise any lighting safety precautions if necessary. Here’s a surface map from NOAA WPC for 1pm this afternoon, notice Bowling Green is just on the edge of the precipitation area as a result of the weak boundary nearby.

Tonight should be mostly uneventful weather wise. Any lingering showers should dissipate with the loss of afternoon instability and skies should be mostly clear. Dewpoints will still be in the low 60’s with calm winds. This is great weather to venture out and enjoy some of the fun Bowling Green has to offer. Keep in mind,  NAM & GFS guidance are disagreeing a bit with the position of the boundary. We’ll see what happens, but regardless, the overall outlook today looks great. A little competition can make life more entertaining though.

Sunday 6/1 – Partly Sunny; Isolated showers – High 87º / Sunday Night – Mostly Clear – Low 66º

This may sound like a repeat so bare with me. I repeat, this may sound like a repeat so bare with me. The weak boundary mentioned earlier is practically dissipated by Sunday morning. High pressure to our northeast is beginning to drift to the southeast and is headed off the coast of the Carolinas by late evening on Sunday. Anticyclonic flow will shift winds back from the south and return more moisture and instability into the atmosphere. Precipitation chances will again go on the increase after a more calm day on Saturday. The map below shows this setup well, valid for 7am Sunday:

Expect a similar cycle of warming temperatures with high’s in the upper 80’s and dewpoints back to near 70 degrees in some areas. Areas lacking rain will see more sunshine and could see heat index values into the low 90’s with the return of more moisture in the air. Skies should be a mixed variety of clouds, just as we’ve seen over the past several days; areas with shower development will obviously see more. Winds will be out of the south at 5-10mph.

Sunday night is a repeat as well. Lingering showers and storms should dissipate with the loss of sun energy from the daytime hours. Temperatures will cool into the mid 60’s with patchy fog developing in the morning on Monday.

Keep in mind all throughout the forecast period; use a radar tool, whether it’s here or your favorite app. Watch for thunderstorm development and plan accordingly, use common sense. If it’s thundering outside stay indoors until the storm passes or dissipates. Plan outdoor activities with the knowledge that precipitation can occur at any time or any place. It’s impossible to know where each individual shower and thunderstorm will develop. I know, not cool.
