Sunday Heat Wave

9A0m1

You say 50’s with sunshine today. Wait, what… 20s again tomorrow?!?

Today 1/26 – Mostly Sunny, Breezy – High: 54˚ / Tonight – Iso’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low: 18˚

6am 20˚ ~ 9am 35˚ ~ 12pm 49˚ ~ 3pm 54˚ ~ 6pm 46˚ ~ 9pm 38˚

After another cold start with temperatures in the teens this morning, southwesterly winds and mostly sunny skies will allow for a nice warm up today. Most of south central Kentucky will reach the low to mid 50s which is 5-10 degrees above average for this time of year.

Winds will be blustery today though, with sustained winds from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with some gusts over 30 mph possible.

By late this afternoon, clouds will be on the increase. This will be in response to an approaching clipper system which will move through the Great Lake states while dragging a cold front through the Ohio Valley. The front will bring minor chances for precipitation Sunday night and it will usher in another round of brutal cold.

Isolated showers are expected to be in the area generally after 9pm this evening. Any shower activity will remain very light and there is a good chance some of you will not see anything at all. Notice in the model loop below the scattered and light nature of any showers in the area.

Loop of simulated precipitation from 6pm Sunday until 9am Monday.

Temperatures will rapidly plummet overnight as cold air moves in; into the upper teens by morning. As a result precipitation may become areas of widely scattered snow showers after midnight. No accumulation is really expected however a few isolated locations could pick up a dusting.

Monday – Mostly Cloudy, Cold – High: 22˚ / Monday Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low:

Winds will pick up out of the northwest with 10 -15 mph winds by morning. The breezy conditions along with temperatures in the teens will result in wind chills in the single digits to start off your Monday. Could be a few flurries around Monday morning as well.

Overall it will be quite a raw day with winds from 8-15 mph creating wind chills generally in the single digits throughout the day. Also, skies will be generally cloudy. If we’re lucky there will be a few peaks of sun during the afternoon hours.

With the clouds and northerly winds bringing in cold air, don’t expect the temperatures to climb much with a daytime high only in the low 20s. In other words, that heat wave will be very short lived.

More COLD temperatures will be spilling southeast-ward by Monday resulting in highs only in the low 20s with lows Tuesday morning near 3.

Monday night will be just downright cold. Temperatures will drop to the low single digits with some locations bottoming out near 0. Winds will not be a huge factor but even the slightest breeze will push wind chills into the 0 to -10 range.

You know the drill by now, bring in pets, prepare for livestock cold stress, allow water to drip from faucets, check your vehicles antifreeze, so on and so forth. Hopefully some of these things have already been taken care of by this point in what has been a brutally cold January.

Tuesday – Frigid, Partly Sunny – High: 15˚ / Tonight – Mostly Clear – Low:

Bundle up baby as the cold continues. Tuesday’s high temperatures will be only in the mid teens despite skies becoming partly sunny as clouds decrease. Overnight Tuesday, temperatures will drop to near 0 for the second night in a row. Again winds are not expected to be a major factor thus wind chills shouldn’t be out of control.

The cold temperatures will continue through Wednesday, with temperatures expected to rise above freezing again on Thursday. No real major weather makers expected during this time frame but we’ll watch for the occasional passing clipper system.
