Ice Age Arrives

No

Michael wants nothing to do with today’s wind chills.

Today 1/6 – Stupid COLD; Partly Sunny, Iso’d Flurries – High 4˚ – Tonight – Slap Yo Momma COLD – Low -2˚

9am 2˚ ~ 12pm 4˚ ~ 3pm 4˚ ~ 6pm 1˚ ~ 9pm 0˚

**Wind Chill Advisory in place through 11am Tuesday morning**

After last night’s winter weather fiasco, we now have t0 deal with serious arctic air that has filtered in behind it.  Westerly winds will howl at 15-30mph today, making for wind chills between -10 and -20˚.

This is the coldest airmass we’ve experienced in several years.  If you plan on spending longer than 10-15 minutes outdoors, don’t leave any exposed skin.  BUNDLE UP.

A few flurries will still be possible tonight, however, no additional accumulations are expected.  Here’s a look at the temperature gradient across the region.  Notice the subzero temperatures in Illinois, that are literally ‘off the grid’ form being picked up by the legend:

Surface Temperature Gradient Valid 8am 1/6/14
Surface Temperature Gradient Valid 8am 1/6/14

Tues – Sunny & Cold – High 15˚ / Tues Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 12˚

Another bitter day…but not quite as cold as today.  Temperatures will climb out of subzero readings tomorrow morning, finally topping out in the mid teens by the afternoon.  Overnight, winds will shift from out of the south, which will keep values from dropping very much at all.  Nothing to see here, folks, it’s just going to be cold.

Wed – Partly Sunny – High 35˚ / Wed Night – Iso’d Wintry Mix – Low 28˚

Wednesday will start off partly sunny, as southerly winds continue to advect warmer air across our proximity.  Temperatures will eventually navigate to the mid 30s, before our next weather maker approaches from the  southwest Wednesday night.

Available moisture will coincide with this disturbance to create the potential at a scattered wintry mix across south central Kentucky, as temps fall back below the freezing threshold.  Temperatures will rebound on Thursday, however, the morning commute could see a few problems.

Have a look at the GFS precip loop below to get a better idea of how this weather maker will evolve.  It is valid from 6pm Wednesday – 6pm Thursday in 6 hour increments:

GFS Precip Loop Valid 6pm Wednesday - 6pm Thursday

That will be all for now, friends.  Stay in touch with me @Wx_Or_Not for updates.  Have questions, reports, or photos you would like to share??  Please get them to me there.  Everyone have a great day.
