Monday Afternoon Update

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy, COLD – High 34˚ / Mon Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 21˚

Not much to talk about, folks.  Cloud deck has started to break up to an extent, as forecast, but clouds are still winning the battle of the skies at the moment.  This is illustrated by visible satellite imagery.  Notice the clearing to our northwest:

Expect partly cloudy conditions through the afternoon, as temperatures remain tied down to the lower 30s.  Overnight, clouds will continue to break up ,as lows tumble into the upper teens.

New Year’s Eve – Sunny – High 44˚ / Tues Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 25˚

A weak warm front will approach from our west throughout our Tuesday, with moisture being no concern.  We will enter the warm sector as this boundary cuts a path to our northeast, where southerly winds will send temps rebounding to the mid 40s.  Overall…a sunny, quiet day.

New Year’s Day – Sunny & Warmer – High 49˚ / Wed Night – Scat’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low 32˚

Plentiful amounts of sunshine should accompany the first day of the new year.  As the warm front continues to track to our north, southerly winds will continue to advect a warmer airmass into south central Kentucky.  The real fun will begin to take shape Wednesday night, as a cold front approaches the area from the northwest.

Models are still in a bit of disagreement as to what type/how much precipitation/accumulation will impact the area.  With temperatures flirting with the freezing threshold, we could see a mixed bag of the wintry stuff falling from the sky Wednesday night, with snow slated as we get into Thursday.  The GFS precip type MODEL below is valid for 12pm Thursday, and suggests snow will be on the agenda:

I’ll await a few more model runs before I dive any deeper.  Hopefully the ensembles come into better agreement before then.  I’ll provide more info in tomorrow morning’s post.
