Dry, Comfortable Conditions for Today

Top of the morning to you! Welcome back to wxornotBG. Those pesky showers that we’ve had to start out this week should be no more once noon rolls around. Take advantage of today and tomorrow, as storm chances remain in the forecast for Friday and into the weekend.

Here’s a current view from our Nolin Lake Dam skycam to start out your day!

Goodbye, Humidity!

Today, a trough will be moving through the area in the upper atmosphere, resulting in the chance for a morning pop-up shower at the surface. However, it’ll be taking that sticky, moist air mass with it and leaving us with dry, comfortable conditions for most of the day.

A trough is represented as an orange dashed line on this surface map
(Aviation Weather Center)

Fun Fact: Although a trough may appear to be a boundary between air masses from the symbolism of the surface map, it is not. It’s simply an elongated area of lower air pressure. These tend to let us know where showers and thunderstorms may form, hence the chance for a morning pop-up shower today.

Theres a chance for a pop-up shower, starting around 9am, as shown by the HRRR model

Along with the humidity will go the clouds as well, so expect mostly sunny skies today. It’ll be a warm one, with temperatures in the mid-80’s, but those will lower to the upper-60’s tonight. Sounds like the perfect time to make some s’mores if you ask me!

Prepare for Today

If you plan to spend any time outdoors, this section is for you! Due to the lack of cloud coverage today, it’s important to stay informed of the UV index. Today, the value for WABBLES varies from 8 to 9.

(Environmental Protection Agency)

Here are some suggestions from the Environmental Protection Agency on how to protect yourself when UV indexes range from 7-9:

  • Wear SPF 15+, protective clothing, and sunglasses.
  • Make attempts to avoid the sun from 10am to 4pm. In other words, the shade will be your best friend today.
  • Eat a pint of ice cream. (This one’s from us.)

That’s all for today, folks! Make it a great one. If you’d like to, follow us at @wxornotBG on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

wx 6/24/20

Partly sunny skies will join a cooler, drier air mass today; an isolated shower will still be possible. Oppressive heat & humidity bring storms back into the mix as we close in on the weekend.
