The abnormally wet spring hasn’t loosened it’s grip much on the Ohio River Valley. We have received nearly double the normal amount rainfall for mid-March, coming in at 4.57 inches for the March 1-17 timeframe. Since January 1, Bowling Green has received a soggy 15.45 inches of rain, which is 5.5 inches more than normal. More rain is on the way as we’ll see an active pattern for the remainder of the week.
Showers and Maybe a Thunderstorm
Another low pressure system will be moving across the Ohio Valley, bringing with it another round of showers and possibly even a few thunderstorms. Showers look to approach WABBLES by the mid morning hours, and continue throughout the day.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed our area in a Marginal Risk for severe weather today.
A Marginal Risk means that isolated severe thunderstorms are possible, but it is only a level 1 of 5. For reference, the day we had severe weather and hail last week was under an Enhanced Risk.
10-15 mph winds out of the south will help transport juicy Gulf of Mexico air into our area, raising our temperature to around 72ºF and our dew point temperatures to the mid 60s. This, along with enough atmospheric instability and energy will create a possibility of seeing some scattered storms this afternoon. The main threat with these will be damaging winds.
Showers will continue overnight, as temperatures drop to around 63ºF, staying much warmer than normal. Total rainfall for today could be around 0.5 inches , with locally higher amounts where there are thunderstorms.
Active Pattern Continues for Thursday
Showers will be around during the morning hours, making it a soggy commute for those still going into work.
Showers will continue throughout tomorrow as temperatures rise to a toasty 75ºF. Winds could be gusty at times, with gusts up to 25 mph possible. Otherwise, winds will be out of the south at 10-15 mph.
By the nighttime hours, showers will still be around, with a few weaker thunderstorms with heavy downpours possible near midnight. Temperatures will again only drop to around 64ºF, as gusty winds continue from the south. Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches will be possible for Thursday.
More Rain and Storms for Friday
Thunderstorms will be possible for the morning hours on Friday as yet another wave comes through. These storms could be knocking on the door between 5-7 AM.
These storms will be ahead of the cold front, so winds will again be out of the south, helping to transport in warm, saturated air from the south. Temperatures at 7 AM will be around 65ºF, with a dew point temperature of 63ºF, makes for a very muggy environment.
Showers will linger behind the morning storms as temperatures top out at 70ºF. We can expect another 0.25 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. With an already saturated ground, additional rainfall could cause flooding problems very easily.
Eventually, the rain will end by the evening hours as the cold front finally arrives. Temperatures will drop to 33ºF Friday night and Saturday morning! We will finally have sunshine on Saturday along with cooler temperatures.
