Weekend Warmup Brings Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Next Week

It may be in the low 20s across WABBLES this Saturday morning, but changes are on the way. Heavy rain and thunderstorms return to South Central Kentucky beginning with increasing clouds and rain chances Sunday night.

Saturday

The weather will be quiet today. A cold front just passed through yesterday and high-pressure is setup in its wake which will result in clear, cold conditions. A light northwest wind will blow through the area today and despite clear skies temps will top out around 40 degrees. After sunset expect overnight temps to fall into the upper 20s.

Sunday

Things really start to change Sunday. Temperatures will be around 35 degrees when you wake up Sunday morning but the high-pressure that was dominating the region Saturday will mosie its way toward the Appalachians and strong southerly flow will develop ahead of our next approaching system, this will help temperatures climb to around 60 degrees by the afternoon.

By Sunday night however we will see increasing cloud cover and rain chances associated with the approaching storm system. Strong southerly wind with gusts as high as 25-30mph will help limit overnight cooling and the temperatures shouldn’t fall far below 50 degrees, if the even fall below 50.

Monday

Rain will continue as you wake up on Monday morning. Temperatures will be in the low 50s by sunrise and will max out around 62 degree Monday afternoon. These warmer temperatures and strong wind in the atmosphere may be enough to spark a few thunderstorms within the widespread rainfall. The threat for a few stronger storms isn’t zero for Monday and Tuesday, although the lack of unstable air and impact of continuous rainfall (which stabilizes the atmosphere) should limit this threat significantly.

Monday night won’t see much change with rain still continuing and temperatures in the upper 50s.

Tuesday

A stalled temperature boundary will be the focus of the heavy rain (Pivotal Weather)

A brief lull in the rain is possible before sunrise Tuesday morning, but this will be short-lived. By 6-7am it seems likely that rain will begin again and continue all day and night. Temps will still linger right around 60 degrees all afternoon but the continuous rainfall, occasionally heavy, will begin to lead to a threat for flooding, especially where any stronger storms develop.

Overnight temperatures will be around 50 degrees.

Wednesday

Wednesday morning wakeup will see, you guessed it, rain still falling. At this point watch out for any flooding as it will be occurring in some locations. Temps will hang out in the upper 40s most of the day.

By mid afternoon though, the rain will finally exit the region and the overnight will cooler, in the low 40s, with partly cloudy skies remaining.

Significant rainfall totals are expected (WPC)

Seems like a familiar tune around the parts.

Have a great weekend WABBLES!
