It’s been a relatively dry week for us around the region, with comfortable temperatures returning over the last couple of days. As they say, all good things must come to an end, and for south-central Kentucky, that means a weekend of heavy rain is upon us.
Cloudy for Friday
Clouds will be on the increase to close out the week as our weekend storm system draws ever closer.
The stationary front will be bisecting the area during the day today, giving all of that Gulf of Mexico moisture a nice path to work into the area this afternoon…though, I think the rain will hold off until later. That should allow us to get close to 65º for a high, despite the cloudiness
That’s not to say we couldn’t get some sprinkles earlier, but I think if we manage to get some rain, it would more likely be closer to the end of your Friday night football festivities. Winds will be kicking up as we go later tonight as well, with gusts approaching 20 MPH as the rain increases overnight. Lows only fall to about 55º.
Soggy, Gusty Saturday
Safe to say this isn’t going to be a good weekend for outdoor activities. The moisture will continue to flow in via gusty southerly winds 10-15 MPH, occasionally approaching gusts of 30 MPH and we’ll see quite the amount of beneficial rain as showers will be ongoing to start your Saturday.
During the day, low pressure will slide up through the region just west of us, the source of the particularly gusty breezes. These breezes will allow us to approach the 70º mark despite the abundant cloud cover and rainfall.
Rain showers will continue to move through the area until the low passes on by, and that could lead to impressive rainfall totals, especially considering the current state of ground moisture around the area.
Widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches will be possible by the time this event is all said and done by Monday evening. The Weather Prediction Center forecast product above indicates somewhere around 2 inches for the region. As for Saturday night, showers continue contributing to these totals as we fall to near 50º.
Drying Out on Sunday
We’ll get the rain out of here as the low pressure and the front finally move by late Saturday night, with showers coming to an end…finally breaking out into a partly cloudy sky by late Sunday morning.
We won’t really see a huge change in air mass on the other side of this system, with highs remaining near 65º thanks to the intermittent cloud cover. That same off-and-on cloud cover will continue through the night as we only fall to around 48º or so for a low.
New Week: Dry to Start, Showers Return
Sunday’s weather looks to continue into Monday as we’ll see another partly cloudy afternoon to start the work week. Temperatures look to peak near 70º with slightly less cloud cover to blot out the sun…but it won’t last long as a disturbance looks to make it’s presence felt with more showers sometime around mid week. We’ll cool off slightly too, with highs around 60º.
