Storm Chances Spell the End of Excessive Heat

It’s been a toasty one to finish off the week and start the weekend and I’m sure many of you are ready for some relief from this unrelenting heat…well, you’re in luck. A cold front will be moving through the area to close out the weekend and while it will bring a risk for rain, those storm chances spell the end of excessive heat.

Changing Weather on Sunday

We start the day with the cancellation of the Excessive Heat Warning. Cloud cover filtering in from our incoming storm system will cool us just enough that the warning is no longer necessary. It will still, without a doubt, be another hot and sticky day around the area. The question of exactly how hot and muggy will be answered by how much cloud cover we’re able to achieve ahead of an approaching cold front.

We’ve got more than enough heat and humidity in place and with the trigger of the cold front drawing closer, we’ll have a shot at scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours.

We’re not expecting much severe weather with this activity but heavy rain is a good bet along with some brief gusty winds. If you don’t manage to get under a cooling storm, though, it remains hazy, hot, and humid.

Temperatures will once again top out right around 90°, combine that with oppressive humidity and you’ve got a recipe for heat indices not far from 100°. So, it’s still a good idea to take things easy out there this afternoon. As afternoon turns to nighttime, we’ll keep those showers and storms in the forecast as the front begins to work through.

Start Your Week with a Frontal Passage

One way to get through a summer Monday is to drag a cold front through it and exactly that will happen as the calendar flips to Monday. We’ll still have some heat and humidity in place, so the front will have plenty to work with to produce scattered showers and storms.

The NAM is liking more of a late afternoon-early evening timeframe but this still has time to change. As with today, any storms will produce heavy rain and gusty winds. Storms will knock us down from an overcast-impacted high right around 85°. As the front moves through and we gradually end the storms we fall to a cooler and more comfortable 63° for an overnight low.

Refreshments Have Arrived

My goodness, the calendar will be going from July 22 to March 23 with the cooler and less humid air that will be filtering in behind this cold front.

Northwesterly winds will invade the area to start the day on Tuesday, providing us with comfortable morning lows in the lower 60s and even more comfortable afternoon highs near 80° with much lower humidity.

These pleasant conditions should last us much of the week. Highs will slowly creepy back up to near 90° by the upcoming weekend with humidity values increasing even more gradually. Things indeed stay dry throughout much of the period, with maybe a chance for rain or storms coming by next weekend. Finally, all that hot weather is paying off.
