Showers and Storms Increase as Barry Nears

Shower and thunderstorm activity returned to the area to kick off the weekend yesterday and we’ll finish the weekend with them as well. Unfortunately, the story continues to start the week when showers and storms increase as Barry nears.

A Few More Storms Possible Sunday

Saturday’s showers and storms were kicked off by a warm front traversing it’s way through the area.

That will continue our streak of hot and humid afternoons, and that hot sunshine will be just the trigger we need to spark off a few showers and storms throughout the day.

I think the main focus for any storms will be closer to the northward advancing warm front. Nonetheless, have a plan B in case you get one of those tropical downpours setting up shop over your neighborhood. Without the rain, we’re back near 90° for a sweltering afternoon high. Not much relief from the stuffiness overnight, falling back to a mild and muggy 70°.

Barry Brings Clouds and Rain

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the tropics, you’ll no doubt know that Barry briefly strengthened into a category 1 hurricane immediately before landfall near Intracoastal City, Louisiana yesterday morning. Now we watch as what’s left of what is now Tropical Storm Barry makes it’s way into the Mississippi Valley, and that will likely mean a lot of rain.

Tropical Depression Barry (as it will soon weaken to) will slowly make it’s way through the Ozarks through the day Monday as it loses tropical characteristics. For us, this means increased cloud cover.

And from that clouds cover we’ll see (in addition to slightly cooler temperatures) some rainfall as well. Rainfall will be off and on during the day and could be heavy at times.

Clouds and waves of rain will keep temperatures down into the mid 80s for highs but it will certainly be soupy with tropical moisture in the air. Off-and-on downpours will continue to sweep through during the evening and overnight hours, with lows dropping to a muggy 73°.

Continuing on Tuesday

As the week rolls on to Tuesday, the remnant low formerly known as Barry will continue to weaken and churn towards the area and this means more opportunities for heavy rain swinging on through.

We can’t rule out some rumbles of thunder or some gusty winds with some of these downpours but by and large rainfall will be the big threat with any activity and that could lead to some quick street flooding in the typical flood-prone areas.

The main axis of heavy rain should stay to our west but we’ll keep an eye on that as the forecast evolves. Temperatures stay slightly cooler than we’ve seen once again with that high near 85° and a muggy overnight low of about 72° will be realized as waves of rain continue.

Saying Bye-bye to Barry

The remnant low formerly known as the tropical depression formerly known as Barry will finally start scooting on out of here by midweek and beyond, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will still be a possibility as highs return to the low 90s by Thursday. A bit of a break in the precip just might head our way as well by next weekend.
