Severe Thunderstorm Watch In Effect Through Sunday Evening

We’ve been keeping our eye on the possibility of severe weather developing across the region this afternoon. The ingredients are starting to come together and thus a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect through Sunday evening.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect through 10:00 PM this evening for Butler, Edmonson, Logan and Warren counties. This doesn’t mean that if you’re in Allen, Barren, or Simpson counties, you can’t see severe weather. It does mean that areas to the north have a better shot at seeing severe weather. The main threats will be damaging straight-line winds, isolated large hail, an isolated spin-up tornado can’t be ruled out, and also some heavy rainfall.

Conditions Now

It’s a warm and muggy afternoon across the area, with temperatures flirting with 90º, dew points above 70º and breezy winds out of the southwest, pushing heat indices close to 100º in some spots. This means we’ve got plenty of fuel to work with to develop thunderstorms.

Upper level winds are more favorable to our north, especially along and north of interstate 64, and that’s where I think the better shot at severe weather will be this afternoon, but we’re by no means out of the woods.

A Slight Risk of severe weather remains in effect for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Severe thunderstorms have already developed across southern Indiana just north of the I-64 corridor

Those storms are heading just north of due east and will affect parts of northern Kentucky. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more development as we head into the evening hours.

At this point, anything that does develop would be scattered but could pack a punch. Thunderstorms will begin to fade a bit after the sunset hour. But more storms will impact the area tomorrow as well.
