Happy Thursday to everyone, we will have to endure another cold morning before a temperature reprieve arrives this afternoon. Highs in the mid 40’s leaves us warmer today as confidence grows for a weekend winter storm.

(Slightly) Warmer Today

With lows in the mid 20’s, we will start this morning shivering in our coats once again until southerly winds bring in some warmer air along with some broken clouds. After such a cold and wet week, this afternoon’s mid 40’s may feel like a return to summer–to a penguin.

Weak, Dry Cold Front Moves Through Tonight

A weak cold front will pass through our area overnight bringing very little precipitation (i.e. sprinkles or flurries). On the downside, it will manage to keep our afternoon highs tomorrow and Saturday in the low 40’s as we wait in anticipation our next big weather maker.

Confidence Grows for A Weekend Winter Storm, But Still Too Early for Type and Amounts

Right now, the jet stream dip likely to bring us wintry weather is just now coming ashore over southern California, thousands of miles away. This means a lot can still change in the track of the resulting system, and, therefore, the forecast over the next several days. Model guidance suggests precipitation will start during the later half of Saturday and continue into Sunday.

Precipitation type is definitely the largest question mark at this point, since rain vs. ice vs. sleet vs. snow has very different impacts and will greatly effect the amounts. Nevertheless, the main take away is that confidence has increased that at least some wintry weather is likely for this weekend which will negatively impact travel. Though at three days out I would not join the bread and milk panic for at least one more day.
