A Typical Summer Time Pattern Returns

Happy Saturday morning, folks! I hope everyone is doing great this morning, and is ready to get this weekend off to a great start! Unfortunately, a typical summertime pattern returns to the region, bringing hot weather and a chance at storms.

Oppressive Heat and Humidity are Here

I’m gonna split this post up into a couple of sections, highlighting (in order) what I think will be most impactful to the weekend and early week across southern KY!

First and foremost, the heat and humidity are back. They really returned on Thursday, but they are in full force now. Yesterday’s high was 92ºF, with the heat index reaching the mid 90s.

That may not be too crazy, but it is hotter than we have seen as of late. The next several days (through at least Tuesday and Wednesday) look to feature this same pattern.

By the afternoon hours, temperatures are expected to range from 88ºF-92ºF, creating some rough heat. In addition, dewpoints are expected to jump into the lower 70s, yielding borderline dangerous conditions if you spend extended time outside.

I just want to avoid the high humidity. There is nothing worse than walking outside and feeling like you're in a sauna. h/t COD Weather

If you have any outdoor plans during the afternoon or evening hours this weekend, and through the middle of next week, be sure to take precautions. Pack plenty of water, wear the sunscreen, and take frequent breaks to avoid getting overheated.

Storm Chances Look to Increase

In addition to sweating as soon as you walk out the door, the hot and humid conditions bring with them an increase in shower and thunderstorm chances.

These begin today. This afternoon, we’ll have weak atmospheric disturbances moving through, so we don’t expect anything too widespread. However, any storm that pops will be capable of gusty winds and lightning.

Sunday and Monday look to feature chances at more widespread activity. We don’t expect a washout on either day at this time. These forecasts can be a bit tough and dependent on other storms, so keep that in mind.

A weak boundary looks to possibly set up across the region during this time frame, creating weak lift and a track for storms to follow. More disturbances look to move through during this time frame as well, helping to increase the chance at storms.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, a more established and strong frontal boundary looks to approach, and maybe even stall out across the region.

This will help continue our storm chances into the middle of the week. Overall, there is the daily possibility of strong storms producing small hail and strong winds. However, the greatest threats will be from lightning and heavy rainfall.

If you have outdoor activities at all through the middle of this upcoming week, be sure to follow the weather closely.
