More Snow On The Way?

Recapping the Winter Storm; eyes on another round of SNOW Monday??

Posted by Landon Hampton on Saturday, 13 January 2018

Most of us are waking up to a fresh snowpack, with most locations ranging between 1-4″ of total snow/ice accumulation, with a few squeezing out 5″. Some of us are still seeing flying flurries out there.

Travel remains treacherous, so if you can avoid it, please do so. Need proof? Here:

Frigid cold temperatures will hang around today and Sunday, before another Arctic front moves in Monday, which might mean more snow on the way?

Staying Cold

Canadian high pressure located to our northwest is filtering in winds out of Canada. This would explain why we’re sitting in the teens this morning, with highs this afternoon only topping out around the mid 20s.

This area of high pressure will advance southeast into the Ohio Valley tonight, keeping things very cold while clearing out our skies. Sunday morning, readings will be back in the teens, with highs once again suppressed to the mid 20s.

More Snow On The Way?

Monday will bring warmer temperatures and improving travel conditions, thanks to the mercury scraping and clawing to top out ~40˚.

This will be very deceiving, considering ANOTHER Arctic front will slice thru the area late Monday into Tuesday, bringing chances for light snow and a jolt of GELID air. The latest NAM shows snow chances Monday night through early Tuesday:

Accumulations don’t look overly impressive. Depending upon our temperatures profiles through the atmosphere, we may see a wintry mix of rain/sleet/snow initially, before a changeover to all snow.

At this point in time, here’s where we stand…we could see nothing at all, up to ~1″ of total snow. As with any system, we’ll have to monitor it closely over the next 48 hours.

The Bottom Drops Out

Following the Arctic front, it’s going to be STUPID COLD. Tuesday morning lows in the single-digits will only recover the the mid teens during the afternoon. Take a look at the frigid look the GFS gives us after Monday’s system…

Early Wednesday morning, we have a forecast low of…ZERO˚. Yes, you read that correctly. The Arctic air will hang around for the better part of next week, so prepare your wardrobe accordingly.
