Winter Storm Warning Issued

The NWS has upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning. The warning is in effect from 3 AM Friday to Midnight Saturday morning.

Ice will be the primary threat. We currently expect rain to switch to freezing rain around 6 or 7 AM, which is smack dab in the middle of the morning commute. Freezing rain will continue for the next few hours, then transition to a sleet and snow mix, before finally transitioning to all snow late in the morning and early in the afternoon on Friday. Below are the thoughts from the National Weather Service.

Ice accumulations up to 1/4″ are expected, however a few isolated higher amounts may be possible as well. This, combined with gusty winds, will have the potential to cause sporadic power outages and tree damage. Heavier freezing rain accumulations may occur to our west where thunder freezing rain is possible.

Sleet will eat away at snow totals. However, sleet accumulations could be impressive as well. Up to an inch of sleet may be possible. Snow accumulations are expected to be around 1-3″, with isolated higher amounts possible.

It should be noted that people with an early commute may start to drive in plain rain. However, the transition to freezing rain will occur quickly due to cold temperatures. Thus, conditions may quickly deteriorate during your commute.
