It’s been an interesting day throughout south central Kentucky. Temperature readings in the low 60s during the predawn hours took a hard tumble thanks to a passing cold front, putting temps in the mid to upper 30s as of 5:30pm.

Cold Is Here To Stay

The passing of this morning’s cold front is the initial push toward a much colder pattern. Skies will rapidly clear tonight, opening up the door to rays of sunshine on Wednesday.

Wednesday morning lows in the 20s will rebound nicely to around 50˚ during the afternoon, before a reinforcing, moisture-starved cold front rolls through early Thursday. This will bring even colder temperatures to the region.

Here’s an idea of what to expect from the NAM 3km model, which shows you temperature fluctuations between Noon Wednesday (49˚) and 12am Friday (27˚).

The result will be much colder temperatures, with highs Thursday and Friday suppressed to the upper 30s.

Reindeer Game Snow Chances

When it comes to winter snow chances, there are a few scenarios we look for in the meteorological world. Heavy snow chances often come with systems working out of the Deep South, complete with Gulf moisture to the south and Arctic air to the north.

We experienced these types of events during the famous/infamous, back to back 8+” snowfalls between mid February – early March of 2015. In case you need a reminder:

The other scenario, which will be possible Friday night into Saturday, is when weak disturbances float in from the northwest. The latest Euro thinks we’ll see a little snow accumulation. Take that with a grain of salt…

At this point, little to no accumulation is anticipated. With that being said, a few locations may get in on a dusting. Snow lovers keep your fingers crossed…I’m not impressed by this weather maker.

Prolonged Winter Period

The forecast beyond the weekend suggests cold temperatures will hang around, along with a “northwest flow pattern”.

We’re keeping our eyes on a series of weather makers that may be on the horizon, which, according to guidance, will be similar to what we could possibly get in on early this weekend.

It’s wayyyy too early to get into details, but it’s worth taking note of.
