The Headline
The headline once again is dangerously hot weather.
Bowling Green’s observing station at the airport registered a high of 96º yesterday, as did the White Squirrel Weather station on the WKU campus. The WKU Farm mesonet site registered a high near 95º and the other Warren County site measured a whopping 97º. And it’s more of the same today.
The Heat Advisory that went into effect yesterday morning continues for the day today, expiring tonight at 7:00 PM. Once again, the National Weather Service is advising “the very young, the elderly, those without air conditioning and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities” to take extra precautions if they have to be outside thanks to heat indices between 105-110º.
If you don’t have to be outside: stay inside, watch a movie, binge your favorite TV show, eat ice cream…just stay cool. But if you have to be outside: wear loose, light-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and don’t strain yourself. I can’t stress this enough: don’t leave little ones in the backseat of a car, no matter how quick a trip you’re making. I know it’s a broken record from yesterday, but we just want everyone to be safe in this heat.
Forecast Discussion
Our discussion once again centers around a high pressure that’s centered itself nearby, giving us this unbearable heat.
What else is there to say other than today is going to be a near repeat of yesterday. The high’s weakened maybe a little bit but not enough to notice around here. Areas farther north may see a pop-up storm, but that’s it. You know the drill.
Today: **Heat Advisory through 7:00 PM** Mostly sunny skies, humid and scorching once again. High around 95º again, heat indices making a run at 105º. Mostly clear skies remain at night, as we fall to about 78º.
- Wake up: 🌤🌡 80°
- Lunch hour: 🌤🌡 94°
- Afternoon plans: 🌤🌡 96°
- Evening time: 🌤🌡 89°
Finally, some relief arrives.
Well, it won’t be totally comfortable, but the more dangerous heat will subside as a front makes it’s way into our area, sparking off some showers and thunderstorms.
With as much moisture as is still in the air, any storm during the day tomorrow could be a soaker but at least it will put a halt to the crazy hot weather.
Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy with a chance for thunderstorms later in the day. High around 90º with heat indices still approaching 100º. Storm chances continue early at night before tapering off late, falling to around 75º.
- Wake up: 🌤 80°
- Lunch hour: ⛅️/⛈ 90°
- Afternoon plans: ⛅️/⛈ 91°
- Evening time: ⛅️/⛈ 85°
Relief continues into Monday as the front kind of gets hung up in our area, allowing for your typical, garden variety afternoon thunderstorms.
But at least it’s another break from the oppressive heat.
Monday: Mostly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms possible. We’ll top out just shy of 90º. Rain chances end overnight, falling into the low 70s.
- Wake up: ⛅️/⛈ 75°
- Lunch hour: ⛅️/⛈ 86°
- Afternoon plans: ⛅️/⛈ 88°
- Evening time: ⛅️/⛈ 85°
Today’s Key Points
Much like yesterday, I’ll leave you with a heat safety slide from the NWS. This time, about the importance of knowing the signs of heat-related illness.
That just about does it for me! Thanks for checking into wxornotBG this morning, and be sure to follow @wxornotBG and @WKUweather on Twitter and like Landon Hampton on Facebook for the latest (hot) weather information throughout the day. Stay cool and safe!
