Good morning everyone, and happy Fourth of July! This is one of my favorite holiday’s of the year because I think the set up for a good Fourth of July party is the easiest. How do you mess up hamburgers and hot dogs? I don’t think that you can, and it is pretty amazing that cookout food is almost exclusively what is made and eaten.
We’re looking at storms today, so those cookouts and fireworks shows may have a little bit of difficulty.
General Set-Up
Currently, we are looking at cloud cover moving through and east of the region in association with a weak disturbance at all levels of the atmosphere. This helped initiated and sustain the rainfall we saw across the region late last night.
We are looking at temperatures in the lower 70s across the region, and this is combined with dewpoints in the lower 70s as well. This will make it feel oppressively humid as we head into the afternoon, and will help set the stage for thunderstorms. The disturbance mentioned above is moving very slowly to the east. This will really be the initiator for potential storms this afternoon.
There is currently a weak atmospheric disturbance across eastern Oklahoma, and this looks to move slowly eastward throughout the next few days, organizing gradually as it does so.
This specifically won’t be what impacts us today, but it will make an impact on tour weather over the next couple of days as it moves slowly eastward. Expect it to bring more showers and storms as it moves through the lower Ohio Valley.
How This Impacts You
Well, on an immediate basis, scattered thunderstorms are likely this afternoon. It is so humid outside, and once we get some sunshine and surface warming this afternoon, the stage will be set for thunderstorm activity. That atmospheric disturbance looks to move ever so slowly eastward, and will likely be a prime source thunderstorms developing. This will also keep our temperatures down, which will be the one good thing we can take from the clouds and rain today.
You should be able to get those fireworks in, but the scattered storms will really just be a Debbie Downer for the Fourth of July, as no one likes rain on this holiday. As the second disturbance across the central Plains moves eastward, it will likely initiated more storms overnight tonight and into tomorrow, and it should be moving out by Thursday evening.

Today: Mostly cloudy, with scattered storms this afternoon. Highs around 82°F. Overnight tonight, look for isolated storms later, with lows around 70°F.
Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy, with scattered thunderstorms. Highs around 84°F. Overnight, look for scattered storm chances to continue, with lows around 71°F.
Thursday: Partly sunny, with scattered storms moving out after early afternoon. Highs around 83°F. Overnight, look for partly cloudy skies, with lows around 68°F.
