Cloudy Friday Gives Way to Rain for the Weekend

wxornotBG 3/24/17: Cloudy, breezy, warm conditions will take us through the final day of the work week, before widespread rain chances arrive this weekend. A few strong storms will be possible.

Yesterday’s Weather

Yesterday was a bit peculiar. So, we started with some filtered sunshine before the clouds moved in thick with an area of rain passing nearby, though we didn’t get a whole lot of rain thanks to the dry air. After the rain moved on? The sun came back out to finish off our Thursday.

Forecast Discussion

Today’s going to be pretty similar to today, except without the rain. Clouds will be on the increase ahead of our next rainmaker that’s coming for the weekend. It won’t be completely overcast but mostly cloudy skies will rule the day. That low pressure is also kicking up southerly winds and they will be blowing strong throughout the day.

Thanks to those southerly winds though, it’s definitely going to feel like spring. Temperatures between 65 and 70 will be possible today, obviously warmer if we see more sunshine.

The main thing is, though, that we stay dry for today.

Today: Mostly cloudy skies during the day with gusty winds. High temperatures settling near 65º, higher with more sunshine. Clouds continue to thicken at night, lows only dropping to around 60º.

  • Bus stop: ⛅️ 55º
  • Lunchtime: ⛅️ 63º
  • School’s out: ⛅️ 67º
  • Evening: ⛅️ 64º

Then the rain moves in. A low pressure system will become the dominant weather maker as we head into Saturday and that’s when it gets wet. A great day to stay in and watch some basketball. Some great NCAA Tournament  Springtime Collegiate Basketball Funtime games on.

Me on Saturday…and most days, actually. (Giphy)

The low is going to slide just to our northwest, allowing more moisture to enter the atmosphere to be precipitated out as rain. Rain chances begin as early as 7:00 am but the bulk of the rain will fall later in the day. In fact, some thunderstorms will be possible later in the day on Saturday. Thanks to the warm temperatures, ample moisture and strong winds, a strong storm or two can’t be ruled out but it won’t be anything widespread.

NAM Simulated Radar valid from 1pm tomorrow until 7am Sunday. (Pivotal Weather)

Models are indicating the possibility for up to an inch of rain for the whole weekend. Obviously with scattered showers, some areas may get a lot of rain while some areas will see very little; it’s all up to the luck of Mother Nature’s draw.

Temperatures will be similar to today’s, if a bit warmer. 70s look a bit more likely tomorrow as we are firmly entrenched in the warm sector of this storm system.

Tomorrow: Overcast skies with rain chances increasing throughout the day. High around 70º. Showers and storms continue at night with a low only around 55º. It’s not going to be great.

  • Wake up: 🌧 64º
  • Lunchtime: 🌧 68º
  • Evening: 🌧/⛈ 62º

For our day on Sunday, the storm system will still be with us but it will slowly be moving away. That means the rain is going to continue into the second half of the weekend as well.

Temperatures look very similar to Saturday, actually. We’ll once again warm into the lower 70s as the cold front associated with this system approaches. Also, the rain chances look to diminish as the day goes along, with the highest chance early in the day. Rain will be tapering off by late day into Sunday evening. Temperatures will be somewhat cooler Sunday night, into the mid-50s rather than the lower 60s. That’s a plus, right?

Sunday: Overcast skies with rain chances greatest in the morning but decreasing throughout the day. A high once again around 70º. Showers taper off in the evening with cloudy skies and a low right around 55º.

  • Wake up: 🌧/⛈ 57º
  • Lunchtime: 🌧 67º
  • Evening: ☁️ 59º

Today’s Key Points

  • Breezy, mild and cloudy for Friday.
  • Rain moves in for the day on Saturday. A strong storm or two not out of the question.
  • Rain begins moving out during the day on Sunday.
  • Active pattern continues with more storm chances to start the workweek.
