Today 5/11 – Scattered Strong PM Storms; Windy – High 85˚ / Tonight – Iso’d Showers & Storms Early; Clearing Skies – Low 59˚

Good morning! We’re off to a very mild start today, as early morning lows have only managed to drop to the upper 60s overnight. Expect another warm day today, with temperatures reaching the middle 80s ahead of a cold front, which will sweep through the state tonight. It will be a windy day with average wind speeds of of 10-20 mph. Gusts of 25-30 mph are not out of the question.
Tonight’s cold front will be associated with an area of low pressure that will move from southern Minnesota into the upper peninsula of Michigan today. Currently, a large area of rain and storms is positioned to our west, and this area of precipitation is expected to weaken and break apart as it moves east and loses support from a nocturnal low level jet currently left in place from last night.
There could be redevelopment of these storms this afternoon, as partly to mostly cloudy skies allow moderate instability to build across Kentucky. Wind shear will be present, but does not look all that impressive due to our distance from the area of low pressure. Parameters indicate that we could see a few severe storms today, but a widespread threat is not likely.
The SPC currently has placed all of Kentucky in a Slight Risk for severe storms today. Damaging winds look to be the main threat, with large hail possible as well. An isolated tornado can’t be ruled out, but the threat looks very low at this time.
Thunder and lightning should be plentiful, and there could be some locally heavy downpours with high precipitable water values in place. Rainfall amounts look to be around 0.25″ today, with locally heavier amounts possible, especially those of us that see storms.
Our window of timing for storms will be from 1pm-7pm today and the threat for storms will quickly end after sunset, as a surface cold front plows east across the state. Isolated showers are possible until midnight, with clearing skies joining low temperatures dropping into the upper 50s thereafter.
Tuesday 5/12 – Mostly Sunny – High 75˚ / Tue Night – Mostly Clear – Low 50˚
We will see temperatures running around 10 degrees cooler behind the cold front tomorrow with much lower dew points as well. It will feel like Spring once again tomorrow with mostly clear skies as surface high pressure builds over the Tennessee Valley.
Wednesday 5/13 – Mostly Sunny – High 75˚ / Wed Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 53˚
We will see a repeat of tomorrow’s beautiful weather on Wednesday as an upper-level ridge builds over the eastern U.S. The only difference may be a few more clouds overnight in response to a disturbance to our west.
