Wednesday Morning Bowling Green Weather Update

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Today 1/21 – Mostly Sunny – High 55º / Tonight – Partly Cloudy; Clouds Increasing – Low 30º

Good Wednesday morning, Bowling Green! It’s been a beautiful last couple of days here, as above-normal temperatures graced Bowling Green weather. However, as with all good things, this too must come to an end.

Today will give us our last taste of temperatures in the 50s, as cooler air – more typical of this time of year – will begin to settle back into the area. After a few morning clouds, mostly sunny skies should make for a pleasant Wednesday as temperatures hit the 50s once again. Short term models show temperatures being warmer than previously forecasted, with highs reaching into the mid-50s by the afternoon under plenty of sunshine. Winds will be from the west between 5-10 mph.

As for tonight, cloudiness and some cooler temperatures are in store as the night progresses. Mostly cloudy skies with lows in the low 30s are expected.

Thursday,1/22 – Mostly Cloudy, Cooler – High 45º / Thursday Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 29º

With zonal flow at the jet stream level, a gloomy day is in store for Thursday… Sigh.

High pressure will keep our region dry, but mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low to mid-40s will serve as a saddening contrast to the beautiful, warm weather we were lucky enough to experience earlier this week. However, these temperatures will actually fall right around normal for this time of year. Surface winds will transition to the north and northeast at around 5 mph.

Clouds will stick around Thursday nights as lows drop a few degrees below freezing. Winds will become fairly calm.

Friday 1/23- Cloudy; Chance of Rain/Snow – High 38º / Friday Night – Snow Ending- Low 28º

The next interesting system comes into play Friday through early Saturday. A building low pressure center will make its way across the Gulf States Friday before moving northeastward and traveling up the Atlantic Coast Saturday. This system was originally going to bring predominately rain to our area, but latest models are hinting at a possibility of SNOW.

Now, many different weather “ingredients” must come into play before we can get snow. The combined timing of forcing, moisture, and temperature decide what precipitation – if any – will fall. Right now, the recent models look somewhat promising, but we will have to keep an eye on this system, its track, and temperature profiles in the next day or so and keep you all updated on the latest information.

The greatest chance for precipitation from this system will be Friday night and evening; whatever falls will be out of the area early Saturday. The model below shows the forecasted 3-hour precipitation and 1000-500 mb thickness for Friday at 3 PM. The yellow 5400 line situated over Kentucky is commonly used as a rain/snow line.
