The reason for both the warm and wet weather today is a surface low pressure system that began in the Gulf and is working its way northeast towards the Great Lakes region. This low pressure will bring an associated warm front through the area today, allowing temperatures to soar into the upper 50s and lower 60s across Kentucky by the afternoon.

Here in Bowling Green, we can expect widespread showers and a few thunderstorms during the day and into tonight. Large amounts of moisture will be streaming in from the Gulf, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours when rainfall will be heaviest. Temperatures will remain extremely warm until about midnight tonight, as a cold front swings its way eastward. Winds will ramp up to 15-20 mph this afternoon, with gusts of up to 35 mph possible.

So here is your Saturday summarized in three words: Warm, Windy, and Wet.

Sunday, 1/4 – Mostly Cloudy; Few Rain/Snow Showers Possible – High 47º / Sunday Night – Partly Cloudy and Cold – Low 22º

During the day Sunday, temperatures will be on the decline following the passage of a cold front early Sunday morning. Temperatures will begin in the 40s for the morning, but will fall into the 30s for the afternoon and evening. Some scattered rain/snow showers are possible during the day Sunday, but nothing substantial is expected as the majority of the precipitation will have pushed through Saturday night.

Skies will be mostly cloudy Sunday, but will begin to clear during the overnight and early morning hours Monday. Temperatures will plummet into the low to mid-20s Sunday night.

Monday, 1/5 – Sunny; Cold – High 31º / Monday Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 23º

We will finally have a break from precipitation on Monday, as high pressure settles into the region. Sunny skies are in store for the start of the week, but so area much cooler temperatures. Highs are not expected to make it above freezing for most of the state of Kentucky, as cold air filters into the area. Monday night will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low to mid-20s.
