Good afternoon, temperatures have been a few degrees cooler than originally expected today as we are seeing some low clouds hang over southern Kentucky this afternoon.
These clouds are associated with a surface low far to our southeast in northern Florida. Skies will begin to clear overnight as this low moves farther east. Low temperatures overnight will be dependent on cloud cover. If clouds hold on longer than expected, temperatures will only drop into the upper 20s. If we see clearing as expected, lows will reach the middle 20s.
Tuesday 12/30 – Partly Cloudy – High 39° / Tue Night – Mostly Clear – Low 21°
Calm weather is expected over the next several days as the jet stream will become nearly zonal over southern Kentucky. Zonal flow will limit our precipitation chances, but a backing wind profile leading to northerly surface winds will usher in colder temperatures by midweek.
Afternoon high temperatures will struggle to reach 40° tomorrow although we will see the return of sunshine under partly cloudy skies. Mostly clear skies overnight will allow low temperatures to drop into the lower 20s.
New Years Eve – Partly Cloudy– High 33° / Wed Night – Clear – Low 18°
Cold air advection will continue on New Years Eve with surface high pressure will be located to our west.
Although we will see mostly clear skies on New Years Eve, it will be very cold with high temperatures struggling to reach the freezing mark. If you are going out to celebrate Wednesday night be sure to bundle up as low temperatures will be in the teens.
We are currently keeping an eye on a cutoff low expected to form in the southwest that could lead to a prolonged precipitation event later this week. With cold air in place, some of this precipitation could begin as snow late Thursday night.
