Where is the Snow?

After an anomalously cold November,  the pattern has become fairly mild over the past several weeks. Even though around 50% of the country was covered in snow earlier this season, the national snow cover has been decreasing ever since. Currently, only 20.0% of the country is covered by snow and the average snow depth is 1.3″.

This is a sharp contrast to this time last year when 55.5% of the country was covered in snow and the average snow depth was 3.1″. It doesn’t look like there will be much snowfall occurring over areas with no current snow cover.

The current snow cover may even begin to decrease tomorrow as warmer temperatures start eating away at the snowpack. Check out this map displaying snowpack temperature. The red shades indicate snowpack temperatures near 32° which would suggest areas of melting snow.
