Heavy Snow Expected in the Smoky Mountains

The same system that has been affecting our region today with freeze warnings, and a chance of some snowflakes, will also impact eastern Tennessee. The brunt of the system is expected to impact the far eastern portions of the state. Along the Appalachian mountains, a winter storm warning has also been issued.

The heaviest accumulations will likely fall at the highest elevation. According to the winter storm warning text, some places may receive over a 18″ of snow. Elevations above 2500′ will likely see 6-12″ of snow. Gatlinburg, which is at the foot of the Smoky Mountains is expected to get a slushy accumulation of an inch.

In preparation for the heavy snow, the National Park closed a couple roads today. Those roads, Newfound Gap Road and Clingman’s Dome Road, are both pretty high elevation. Now we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see the beautiful pictures that are to come. Below is a graphic of the winter storm warning area.
