The tropical season has been very quiet over the past few weeks in the Atlantic Ocean. If you are looking to find a tropical disturbance, you’ll have to turn to the eastern Pacific where Hurricane Rachel is churning over open water. Rachel is a category 1 hurricane currently positioned 400 miles southwest of the Baja peninsula with a low pressure of 981 mb. Maximum sustained winds are 85mph with gusts up to 100mph.
Hurricane Rachel looks pretty mean on satellite imagery thanks to numerous thunderstorms surrounding the circulation. A distinct “eye,” is still not visible with this hurricane.
Fortunately, Rachel is not expected to move much over the next few days and cooler water temperatures will help to weaken this storm into a tropical depression by Tuesday. Check out this odd path forecast from the NHC:
