Severe Storms Possible Today

Real Time Regional Radar:

Today 7/8 – Scattered Severe Thunderstorms – High 89° / Tonight – Scattered Thunderstorms – Low 68°

Scattered showers and storms are ongoing this morning. We’ll see another chance of severe weather today, most likely occurring this afternoon and evening. An upper level trough will dig south into the region, meanwhile strengthening a bit.

This will provide ample lifting in the atmosphere that, when combined with the high dewpoints across the region, will produce numerous strong thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has placed our region in a “Slight” risk (think enhanced) for severe weather. Although hail, frequent lightning and torrential rainfall will all be threats, the greatest threat appears to be damaging wind. The SPC says you have a 30% probability of seeing severe winds (≥58mph)occur within 25 miles of you today:

As previously mentioned, heavy rain will also be a concern with any thunderstorms that form across the region. Precipitable Water values are running quite high, with widespread forecast amounts over 2″. Thus, expect some ponding of water over roadways, and perhaps some flash flooding as well. Expect a general decrease in thunderstorm intensity during the overnight hours, however don’t be surprised to wake up from some pretty loud thunder.

Wednesday 7/9 – Partly Cloudy – High 87° / Wed Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 63°

A much better day is in store across the region on Wednesday. This is because the cold front that provided us with the chance of strong thunderstorms will be moving out of the region on Wednesday morning. This will pull all the moisture with it, so we’ll have much drier conditions in store. Expect partly cloudy skies with a high around 87°.

A great Wednesday night is also in store across the region. Those lows will feel great as temperatures drop down into lower 60s under partly cloudy skies.

Thursday 7/10 – Mostly Sunny – High 87° / Thur Night – Mostly Clear – Low 67°

The quiet weather will continue on Thursday. We’ll be on the backside of a shortwave trough, which will provide us with a cool northwest flow. This will help keep temperatures down quite a bit across the region. Expect mostly sunny skies with a high around 87°.

Conditions will remain great overnight as well. Temperatures will increase a bit compared to Wednesday night. Thus, we’ll expect lows in the mid to upper 60s, under mostly clear skies. Get out and enjoy it! Don’t be a couch potato…or couch cat?
