Friday Morning Update

Real-time radar:

Today 5/30 – Scattered Showers & T’storms – High 86° / Tonight – Isolated Showers – Low 65°

6am 67˚ – 9am 77˚ – 12pm 84˚ – 3pm 86˚ – 6pm 81˚ – 9pm 77˚

I could just copy and paste the forecast today from the last few days and it would be right on. Tempting but, no. A warm, humid air mass has settled over the Ohio Valley, and over much of the country, as a large ridge has overtaken the heart of the country and resultantly has us in a very uncomfortable atmosphere.

Afternoon heating and abundant moisture has a repeat cycle of scattered showers and thunderstorms all across the region and is trending to stick around a bit longer;  but a break may come over the weekend though as northeast winds are helping to calm the atmosphere down a bit by driving the weak boundary out. Plus, the upper level low to our southwest is slowly moving out of the area, but moving to the west actually, which is due to the lack of jet stream dynamics that are well to the north, this will help to remove some lifting to aid calmer weather as well.

After patchy morning fog, expect partly sunny skies today with temperatures rising into the mid 80’s all across the region. Dewpoints will hang around the 70 degree mark which will aid scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms and heat index values close to 90 at times. Winds will be light and variable but mostly out of the east as the upper low’s counterclockwise wind flow continues to spin nearby.

A warm, humid day is yet again in store for us and the best thing to do is to keep an eye on the radar to help determine any outdoor activities or plans. If any stronger storms form, they will contain lighting and strong downdraft winds, just use common sense and use lighting safety precautions if necessary.

Tonight will be another repeat forecast as well. Any lingering showers or thunderstorms will dissipate with the loss of sun energy and temperatures will slowly cool off into the mid 60’s by Saturday morning. Skies will be partly cloudy and patchy fog will develop as the air temperature reaches the dewpoint. Winds should remain light and out of the northeast.

Saturday 5/31 – Mostly Sunny; Isolated showers – High 86º / Saturday Night – Mostly Clear – Low 66º

Saturday’s weather will be an almost exact replica of Friday with the exception that precipitation coverage should be much more isolated as air mass thunderstorms will have less lifting mechanisms available and persistent northeast winds reducing moisture availability. If there was a time for a break, the weekend would be it! Temperatures will climb into the mid and upper 80’s and winds will be 5-10mph from the northeast. Thanks to high pressure trying to settle in from the northeast, we can all have more enjoyable outdoor plans. Just don’t forget to go to work.

A surface map from NOAA WPC depicts a good outlook for us Saturday. Short and simple. High pressure to the northeast and northeast winds. Warm, but calm and enjoyable weather. But don’t rule out that very isolated threat for a stray shower or thunderstorm.
