Rain to Sleet/Snow

Today 3/16 – Rain/Sleet & Breezy – High 46˚ / Tonight – Rain/Sleet/Snow Mix– Low 28˚

 9am 44˚ ~ 12pm 41˚ ~ 3pm 38˚ ~ 6pm 35˚ ~ 9pm 34˚

As expected rain is overspreading much of south-central Kentucky this morning. In fact as the radar image below indicates, there is a large area of rain off to our south and west which has still yet to move through. What does that mean? Basically that it is going to rain almost all day long. A few pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall off to our southwest showing up as well which may into our area.

Rain will continue almost, if not, non-stop right into this evening. In total, between 0.50″-1″ of rain is expected. Some areas, especially closer to the TN border could see isolated totals 1″+. Take it slow when driving today, watching for ponding of water on the roadways.

Temps will be slowly cooling throughout the day thanks to breezy, 10-20 mph NE winds; gusts could be 25 mph+. So our high will occur this morning, in the mid to upper 40s, before colder air spills its way in. By as early as mid-morning, parts of the northern counties will fall into the upper 30s with the remaining areas falling into the 30s by later this afternoon.

Eww… 30s, Wind & Rain!

As temperatures continue to cool, this evening into the overnight hours  may get a little more interesting… a wintry mix of mainly sleet and snow still looks plausible for the area. First off, any wintry weather will be light and shouldn’t cause any panic. However, caution should be given if traveling late this afternoon into tonight as a few slick spots could develop.

Sleet could begin to mix with rain as early as 2pm in the northern counties; points southward thereafter. Some locations have the potential to see a rain/sleet mix for several hours. A full transition over to sleet or sleet/snow is possible around or after 6pm, in the north first, working southward toward the TN border by midnight. Most precipitation will be exiting by midnight however, maybe sooner. A few areas of freezing rain/drizzle are possible overnight.

High-Resolution NAM for ~7pm; Pink is a Wintry Mix

Any accumulations should remain light. Obviously areas across the north will see the best chance at some accumulation, primarily in Butler and Edmonson Counties, but anywhere in the northern half of the area could see up to a half an inch or less. A dusting can’t be ruled out anywhere, but it’s highly likely that some areas don’t pick up any accumulation at all.

Temperatures are expected to finally fall to and below freezing around or after 9pm in the north, and as far south as BG around midnight. Temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to near 30 by morning so watch for some slick spots if traveling.

Mon – Partly Cloudy – High 48˚ / Mon Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 35˚

As luck would have it, precipitation should have almost, if not all, come to an end by Monday morning. Could be a lingering flurry or light freezing drizzle. Regardless, watch for a few slick spots on the morning commute.

Otherwise not much to talk about. Skies will try to clear but enough clouds should hang around through the day and into the overnight to call it partly cloudy. Cool with a high only in the upper 40s.

Tues – Partly Sunny – High 60˚ / Tues Night – Iso’d Showers – Low 45˚

The return of southwest winds will allow temperatures to warm back up. Skies will be partly sunny with an increase in clouds late in the day as a weak cold front pushes our way. There could be a few light showers overnight as the front passes through. Don’t worry, it won’t be drastically colder behind the front.

Hand clap for warmer temperatures!

That’s all I have for you. Overall, rain should remain the top story but do watch for some slick spots tonight. Everything is still not set in stone and there remains some uncertainly…. thus you should keep up with the latest by following @WxOrNotBG and @WarrenCountyWx on twitter. Have a great day… stay dry.
