Thursday Afternoon Update

hamster-wheel-o

Cloudy, dreary, chances for light snow…will it ever end!?

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy, Scat’d Flurries – High 26˚ / Tonight – Cloudy & Cold – Low 12˚

3pm 26˚ ~ 6pm 24˚ ~ 9pm 19˚ ~ 12am 17˚ ~ 3am 13˚ ~ 6am 12˚

High pressure is currently tracking our way from the west, however, shallow moisture will keep cloudy skies and light snow showers/flurries around through the remainder of the afternoon.  Use caution on the evening commute, as roads could once again become slick.  Tonight, we’ll remain partly to mostly cloudy, as temps take a big tumble to the lower teens.  BRRR.  Here’s a look at how the current surface conditions look across the area:

Surface Model Valid 3pm 2/6/13
Surface Model Valid 2pm Thu

Fri – Partly Cloudy – High 28˚ / Fri Night – Scat’d Snow Showers – Low 22˚

High pressure will track eastward as we progress throughout our Friday, which may bear gifts, in the form of a few rays of sunshine.  Don’t let the sun be mischievous and trick you, as high temp values will remain suppressed to the upper 20s.

Late Friday night, a weak disturbance looks to track in from our southwest, bringing with it chances at light snow showers.  As of this moment, accumulations look to be minor at best. As we witnessed last night, minor amounts can cause quite the scene regarding travel, so please do so with caution if you plan on being out.

Sat – Scat’d Rain & Snow Showers – High 38˚ / Sat Night – Iso’d Snow Showers – Low 23˚

Leftover moisture will combine with enough forcing to keep scattered snow showers in the forecast through midday Saturday.  Again, little to nothing is expected regarding accumulations, as temperatures look to quickly catapult above freezing.  You should stay aware of potential slick spots, regardless.

The GFS precip loop below is valid from 12am Saturday – 12am Sunday in 6-hour increments.  It keeps light snow across our proximity through midday.  Hopefully this helps you grasp how this system may evolve

GFS Precip Loop Valid 12am Sat - 12pm Sun
GFS Precip Loop Valid 12am Sat – 12pm Sun

Throughout Sat night, we may keep a few flurries in the outlook, as moisture looks to continue to overstay its welcome.

Another quick shot at snow looks possible on Sunday, with an even better opportunity at seeing the white stuff come next Tuesday and Wednesday.  It’s still wayyy too early to detail specifics, but it’s worth noting that this has the potential to be a bigger event than what we’ve dealt with over the past week.
