AM Light Snow

radar_545
Radar valid at 5:45 am this morning indicates light snow over much of Kentucky with the light snowfall just beginning here in the Bowling Green area.

***Winter Weather Advisory for Edmonson and Barren Counties until 3 pm CST.***

Today 1/25 – AM Scad’t Snow Showers, Breezy – High: 39˚ / Tonight – Mostly Clear – Low: 15˚

7am 26˚ ~ 9am 29˚ ~ 12pm 34˚ ~ 3pm 39˚ ~ 6pm 32˚ ~ 9pm 24˚

As expected, light snow has moved into the area this morning. Noting the current radar posted above, you can note the area of snowfall which generally extends from the Great Lakes right into western Kentucky. This is producing light snow across our region this morning.

Light accumulations have already been noted this morning and these light accumulations will continue for the next several hours. As was mentioned earlier, generally a dusting to a half inch seems likely for most in our area however some locations could see up to an inch.

Locations further north and east such as Edmonson and Barren counties where the Winter Weather Advisory has been issued have the best chance of seeing around an inch. Scattered snow showers should all come to an end before noon with the steadiest snow occurring from now through 9am.

There are already reports of roads beginning to become snow covered (as seen above) which would be expected to be the case with the cold temperatures recently. This is obviously going to lead to slick spots this morning so please if you must travel use caution.

Also the winds will be gusty this morning with winds generally from 10 – 20 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph. This could cause some areas of blowing snow (because it is so powdery) which could lead to reduced visibility at times causing further travel issues. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing this afternoon and the snow expected to end by noon, thus try to delay any travels until a little later.

The clouds will gradually begin to clear into the afternoon and evening as the system quickly moves eastward. Winds will die down as well. And finally we will rise above freezing for the first time since Tuesday morning. It will still be cool today however with highs only in the upper 30s to near 40.

By this evening temperatures will quickly make the plunge back below freezing as winds blow from the NW and become nearly calm overnight. Lows will bottom out in the mid to low teens. Any lingering snow, or areas of melted snow could refreeze this evening leading to continued slick spots in some locations, thus travel with caution through this evening/overnight.

Sunday – Mostly Sunny, Breezy – High: 48˚ / Sunday Night – Iso’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low: 18˚

Sunday is certainly the odd duck in the forecast as southwest winds ahead of the next clipper along with mostly sunny skies will allow temperatures to warm quite nicely.

Temperatures will quickly rise through the 30s and into the mid to upper 40s. A few locations may even hit the 50 degree mark.  The only caveat in an otherwise nice day comparatively will be the gusty winds. Winds could be anywhere from 15-25 mph with gusts over 30 mph.

By Sunday evening clouds will increase as yet another clipper system moves across the Great Lakes region. There will be the typical slight chance of precipitation overnight which could include light rain and snow. As has been the case recently, the system overall is expected to have little affects if any.

The real story will be another wave of bitterly cold air which will move in behind the system just in time for the start of the work week. By Monday morning temperatures are expected to be back down to the teens.

Monday – Decreasing Clouds – High: 22˚ / Monday Night – Partly Clear – Low:

Monday needs little other description than cold. An upper level trough will again be positioned over the eastern United States allowing for another round of cold air to come spilling southward.

Other than the cold, skies should be gradually clearing after  clouds hang around to start the day. By Monday night the chill will once again hold a firm grip on the area as lows dive into the low single digits to near 0.

That’s all for now. Stay safe if traveling any; while snow amounts will remain light, it certainly doesn’t take much to create some slick spots.

Again we’ve already got slick spots being reported out there so take it slow if you must travel. For the latest up-to-date information on the snow and more be sure to follow @Wx_Or_Not and @WarrenCountyWx on twitter. Thanks all for reading, enjoy your Saturday and be safe.
