Winter Is Back

jim

That’s right, Jim…it’s gonna be a cold one.

Today 1/21 – Scat’d Snow Showers, BLUSTERY – 35˚ & Falling / Tonight – Partly Cloudy – Low

**Winter Weather Advisory for Butler, Barren, Edmonson, and Warren County until 12pm today**

6am 35˚ ~ 9am 29˚ ~ 12pm 24˚ ~ 3pm 21˚ ~ 6pm 19˚ ~ 9pm 14˚

A well advertised clipper system is currently in the process of diving southeast across south central Kentucky.  My thoughts have not changed regarding this weather maker.  Sporadic snow showers will advance southeast over our proximity through midday, as a low pressure system continues to wrap up in eastern Tennessee/southwest Virginia.  Here’s a look at current surface conditions to help illustrate what I just explained:

As far as accumulations are concerned, I’m still thinking we could see anywhere from a dusting – 1″ of snowfall.  Localized areas may even see values reach 2″.  As mentioned in previous posts, the hit & miss nature of these type of systems means everyone will NOT see the white stuff.  It will all be dependent upon your location.  Utilize the radar at the top of the page to follow the activity.

Aside from snow amounts, plummeting temperatures and northerly winds of 20-30+mph will make for a very blustery day.  This could cause visibility issues when combining with snow.  Wind chills will be in the single digits this afternoon as a result.

Dress to fight the precip & wind today, folks.  Please use caution if you’re traveling this morning…the commute could become quite slick in a very short amount of time as the snow moves in.  The timing is more concerning than the amount of snow we will receive.

Wed – Partly Sunny – High 30˚ / Wed Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 12˚

Light southerly winds will take early morning lows from the single digits back to around 30˚.  Outside of that, partly to mostly sunny skies will accompany cold conditions.  Really not too much to talk about.

Another cold front will pass to our southeast on Wednesday night, which will increase our cloud cover across the region, as well as reinforce an Arctic airmass across the region.

Thu – Partly Cloudy, COLD & Breezy – High 20˚ / Thu Night – Clear – Low

Strong northwesterly winds will pick up as the cold front passes, which will limit Tuesday’s high temperatures to around 20˚.  An arctic high will build in behind this boundary, which will also assist in suppressing our temperature values.  Take a look at the pressure model loop below for a better understanding:

Pressure Loop Valid 6am Thu - 6am Fri
Pressure Loop Valid 6am Thu – 6am Fri

Wind chills are forecast to remain in the lower teens/single digits.  Other than the frigid cold, all looks to remain quiet.  Keep the heat turned up this week.

That’s all I’ve got for the morning update.  As always, stay in touch with me @Wx_Or_Not, where I’ll be posting frequent updates regarding this morning’s weather maker.  Everyone have a great, safe day.  Thanks for reading.
