Happy Thursday, Bowling Green! I hope everyone has been enjoying the week so far because soaking rains are expected this weekend amid the remnants of Hurricane Laura. Along with this rainfall, comes the threat of flooding across W.A.B.B.L.E.S.
The Latest on Laura:
As of 4AM (CDT), Hurricane Laura was located near Lake Charles, LA and producing maximum sustained winds of up to 120MPH. Laura made landfall early this morning near Cameron, LA as a Category 4 monster packing winds upwards of 150MPH within the eyewall.
Laura will slowly begin to wind down as it progresses further inland. Once the storm system makes it’s way into the Commonwealth, it is expected to be a tropical depression, posing a very limited wind threat by this point.
Scattered Storm Chances Today
After starting the business day in the lower 70s, temperatures climb to reach an afternoon high of around 90 degrees. As per usual this time of year, scattered showers and storms are possible with daytime heating this afternoon. Coverage should only be about 20-30% area-wide.
Widespread Rain Moves in Friday Afternoon…
Friday will feature feature increased rain chances as compared to today. This is due in part to the approach of Laura from the south and west. Temperatures start from a sticky 75 degrees or so in the morning, and climb modestly to reach the middle 80s by mid-afternoon.
Along with the uptick in showers and storms Friday comes the risk of severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of W.A.B.B.L.ES. in a SLIGHT (2/5) risk of severe weather. The primary risk is the threat for isolated tornadoes, so please stay weather aware Friday afternoon/evening. This is related to the remnants of Laura.
Laura’s Impact on the Weekend
Laura will certainly be the dominant feature in this weekend’s forecast. As the remnants of Laura progress into the Commonwealth late Friday evening, widespread showers and storms are a good bet across the region.
Rainfall totals will likely be upwards of 2-3 inches across south-central Kentucky (per the latest model guidance), with locally higher amounts possible. Because of this, the flooding risk is elevated on both Friday and Saturday. The risk of isolated tornadoes is present through the duration of the event as well. However, Sunday doesn’t appear to be a total washout, as Laura’s remnants will finally begin to move east late in the day on Saturday.
