Quiet Wednesday Before Rain Chances Return

Good Wednesday morning, friends, and welcome to wxornotBG! Hope your week has been off to a great start so far, and now the weekend is almost in sight. We can expect a quiet Wednesday before rain chances return.

Last Day for High Pressure

The high pressure that moved in yesterday will continue to move to the east today. Clouds will be increasing as the day goes on, but it’ll remain quiet otherwise.

Wednesday Weather Outlook (WPC)

After a few days of well below normal temperatures, we will finally warm back up to normal for mid-to-late January. Expect temperatures to be around 42ºF. Normal high temperature for January 22 is 45ºF.

Winds will remain light throughout the day along with those increasing clouds. By the nighttime hours, we will have overcast skies. Low temperatures will be near 32ºF, which is slightly warming than normal. The cloudy skies help keep us warmer than clear nights, as explained in the graphic below:

Cloudy skies at night mean warmer temperatures (NWS)

Greenhouse warming is enhanced during nights when the sky is overcast. Heat energy from the earth can be trapped by clouds leading to warmer temperatures during cloudy nights.

Cloudy Thursday

Clouds will be taking over our skies as the next weather system approaches WABBLES. The center of low pressure will track across the Ohio Valley, which will bring rain showers to the area by the afternoon hours tomorrow.

Thursday Weather Outlook (WPC)

While you won’t need the umbrella for the morning commute, you’ll need it for the evening commute. Showers will be covering western Kentucky by noon, and finally arriving at our doorstep by the mid afternoon hours.

European model guidance for tomorrow (Pivotal Weather)

Expect maximum temperatures to be around 48ºF, with winds out of the southeast. Rain will continue into the overnight hours, with temperatures dipping down to around 37ºF. While this system won’t be a total washout, rainfall of up to half an inch is possible.

Rain Continues Friday

Rain showers will continue for Friday as the low pressure system continues to move across the Ohio Valley. Rain showers will be light, and we may see up to a quarter of an inch of rain for Friday.

Friday rain showers (Pivotal Weather)

Eventually the rain will exit by the late hours on Friday, possibly even early Saturday. Winds look to stay light as the system moves through. Afternoon temperatures will be near 47ºF, and overnight lows will be dropping to around 34ºF. We could see some mixed precipitation late Friday on the cold side of the low pressure system, but no impacts are expected at this time.

That wraps up today’s forecast. Hope you have a great Wednesday! Make sure to look for the Afternoon Video Update on Facebook and the Afternoon Weather Story on Twitter, only at @wxornotBG.
