Perfect Fall Weather Today

Good morning friends! I hope your week has been off to a great start so far. Luckily, we are halfway to the weekend! Yesterday was a fairly nice day, but a little windy. We can expect perfect fall weather for today.

Breezy, but Sunny

Thanks to that cold front that passed by on Monday, we now have sunny skies sticking around for a few days. A massive high pressure system has developed over the southeast United States. The cold front that passed through on Monday is now located well off over the Atlantic Ocean.

We are sitting between two systems currently, as we await the next cold front out west to come knocking on our doorstep. For today, we can expect sunny skies, with temperatures around 67ºF. Don’t forget the windbreaker walking out the door this morning. We will have breezy winds out of the southwest, up to 15 mph. Not as windy as it has been the past few days, but still worth noting that it might not be the best hair day.

For tonight, skies will remain mostly clear, with south winds mostly under 10 mph. Temperatures will drop to a crisp 43ºF overnight.

Thursday Outlook

The forecast does not change much from Wednesday into Thursday. We will still be under an area of high pressure, but not for long. Looking at the image below, the cold front will be making its way eventually through the area.

Thursday Weather Outlook (WPC)

The cold front won’t arrive until Thursday evening, but it won’t bring rain chances. Cold fronts can have rain ahead of the boundary (called kata fronts) or rain behind the boundary (called ana fronts). This event will be an ana front. You can learn more about these here. The guidance is hinting that showers behind the front won’t make it to our neck of the woods.

Before the front arrives, we will have southwest winds, which will help warm up temperatures to around 70ºF. Skies will still be sunny, but clouds will be increasing as the front looms closer. The low pressure over Texas (in figure above) will likely work its way northeast and across the Ohio Valley over the weekend.

Tomorrow will be the warmest day of the week, around 71ºF. Winds will be close to calm, which is quite a change compared to the winds we had to start the week. We remain dry during Thursday night, but clouds will be increasing. Temperatures will drop to around 45ºF.

Rain Chances for Friday

Complicated weather is going to be taking place across the US on Friday and into the weekend. The upper level trough will develop a cut off low over Texas, which will then work northeast and straight into the Ohio Valley.

While the center of the low won’t arrive until this weekend, rain chances arrive Friday. The GFS is currently thinking that rain from the low will be coming up from the south, crossing the KY/TN state line by lunchtime. A good soaking will take place for Friday afternoon and into the nighttime hours. The image below shows simulated radar from 1 pm Friday to 1 am Saturday.

With rainy conditions, temperature will be a cool and damp 65ºF. Cool and damp will continue into the overnight, with low temperatures around 47ºF.

Rain Continues into Saturday

Friday night into Saturday morning should be great sleeping weather. A soaking rain will continue from Friday into the overnight and for Saturday. The GFS has the rain finally pushing off around 7 pm Saturday.

Saturday will definitely be a damp day, and with temperatures only around 65ºF. Compared to the cold front that came through on Monday, winds looks to be calmer with this system. We could see anywhere from 1 – 2.5 inches of rain, which will actually be quite welcoming. The US Drought Monitor says we are still experiencing Abnormally Dry (D0) and Moderate Drought (D1) conditions.
