Slightly Cooler but Still Scorching for the Weekend

At 96º, Bowling Green was just 2 degrees away from tying a record high yesterday under scorching sunshine. Unfortunately, that and the lack of rainfall (only a trace at the airport since the beginning of the month), will continue even as a front tries to work through the area. Temperatures will be slightly cooler but still scorching for the weekend.

Frying Again on Friday

Friday’s record high will likely be safe (100º, set back in 1927 and tied in 1939) but that doesn’t mean we won’t see another oppressively hot afternoon around the area. The bad luck with temperatures just won’t end.

Your Friday the 13th will be spent once again under the influence of a ridge of high pressure just to our west, keeping winds southwesterly and the mercury up.

High temperatures once again will top out around 94º or so this afternoon, combine this with dew point values near 70º and we’ll be talking heat indices near 100º again…so it’s not a bad time to use this graphic once again.

Temperatures should begin their slow descent from “blistering” to merely “hot” throughout the evening hours. Friday night high school football will be a muggy affair around the area this weekend, but there’s a bit of relief on the horizon. Overnight lows fall to near 70º under the same mostly clear skies.

Lowering the Humidity for Saturday

A “cold” front will work it’s way through the area late Friday evening and early Saturday morning.

High pressure will be building in on the backside of this frontal boundary that, while only dropping our temperatures back down to around 90º, will allow us to ease back on the humidity all while keeping our mostly sunny skies.

This means that while we’re still staying above average, it won’t feel nearly as stuffy as you head out Saturday afternoon. Those humidity levels might rise a touch more if you’re headed down for the big Louisville/WKU showdown in Nashville tomorrow afternoon, but not oppressive at all.

The slightly lower afternoon high combined with lower humidity will allow for a low near 60º for Saturday night under mostly clear skies. Might need to grab that windbreaker headed out from church on Sunday morning!

Sunday Headed Back to Scorching

And then you’ll forget about the windbreaker by the end of service because we’re warming back up quick for Sunday.

I think the NAM is under-estimating those temps, which may end up right around 95º or so for another mostly sunny afternoon high. The good news is dew points should stay a little closer to 60º or so…not as much humidity = heat indices stay under 100º…but barely.

We’ll muggy up as we head into the nighttime hours, falling back to around 70º for a low under mostly clear skies.

New Week, Still Hot, Still Humid

Mid-September is the new July apparently, because highs in the low-to-mid 90s will continue into the new work week as another ridge of high pressure takes over, bringing back the humidity as well. This could lead to a few chances for cooling storms as we head for the back half of the week…but I’d still prepare for more scorching heat.
