Mother Nature doesn’t know when to say when with the rain chances continuing through the morning hours today and that’s setting up for rain and storms to dominate the weekend.
Rain Remains Friday
The record remains broken as we finish off the work week. After some patchy dense fog around the region this morning, more bouts of rain will overspread the region throughout the day today as a warm front works its way through the region.
After temperatures steadily rose during our Thursday, Friday will see a much larger temperature spike. Even with heavy cloud cover and at times heavy rain, we’ll still manage to make it to above 70º thanks to gusty winds out of the south. Southerly winds will bring more moisture into the atmosphere…which is exactly what we don’t need.
We’ll begin to taper the rain off somewhat during the evening hours with more scattered showers possible late tonight as we only drop back to near 60º for a low.
Strong Storms Saturday?
Our main show will come during the later hours on Saturday as a cold front will touch off numerous thunderstorms during the day. We should get in on this action during the evening hours after an afternoon lull.
Winds will continue to gust not just here in the surface but above our heads as well and even though the atmosphere isn’t call that unstable, it is enough that we could see a few damaging wind gusts tomorrow night. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk for severe weather for us for tomorrow, with an enhanced risk area to our south.
Right now, the models are attempting to push this line of storms through during the evening and into the early overnight hours but this could change as new data comes in, so you’ll want to stay updated.
The main threat with this line of storms will be damaging winds and the potential for trees to be knocked down, especially with the saturated ground we have around the region. Also, it’s highly unlikely but we can never rule out a brief spin-up tornado in situations like these. Flooding will also continue to be an issue as we could see upwards of 1.5 to 2 more inches of rain.
This will cause already swollen rivers, creeks and streams to rise even more. As always, never drive through flooded roadways and keep an eye out in all of the usual spots for high water.
As the rain ends late Saturday, we’ll be left with cloudy skies and a low near 50º.
Drying Out For Sunday
Finally, a break.
We’ll clear that cold front out of here during the day on Sunday and that will finally give the soaked ground a chance to at least start drying out. Winds shift to the west and we’ll slowly clear out. Mostly sunny skies in the afternoon with a high around 60º will be a nice change of pace, as will a cool 40º for a low.
