One Final Day of Cold

Cold today; much warmer Thursday into Friday. Widespread rain slated for the start of the weekend…

Posted by Landon Hampton on Wednesday, January 24, 2018

Cloud cover is hanging around early this morning, but the good news is, filtered sunshine should arrive by the time we get into this afternoon. A few of us may see a few sprinkles early, but it’s not likely…

Westerly winds will howl between 10-20 mph, making for one final day of cold. Readings as of 6AM are located in the low 30s, which should recover to ~40˚ this afternoon. Tonight, clear skies will see readings tank to the mid 20s.

Warmer Weather Ahead

After we get past today, high pressure will shift to our east, opening up the door to southerly winds. This is displayed nicely by the surface map below, valid 7AM Thursday:

These winds will coincide with rays of sunshine to take afternoon highs both Thursday and Friday to the mid/upper 50s.

A few of us may even achieve the lower 60s!

Widespread Rain Follows

Our nice warm up will come with a price, however. With southerly winds rocking and rolling to finish up the work week, Gulf moisture will be transported in.

A passing upper disturbance will bring the necessities for widespread, light to moderate rain showers as we start the weekend. Although Saturday will be very damp, temperatures won’t be bad, returning to the upper 50s.

Another Cool Down

Sunshine should reappear later in the day on Sunday, after a few rain showers in the morning. It’ll remain comfortable, with readings in the 50s. Soak it in while you can, folks, cause you know what’s on the way…

Monday into Tuesday, we’ll see winds turn back out of the northwest, which will usher in colder air, once again. Much like yesterday and what we’re expecting today…sunshine will be present during this time, however, highs will be constrained to the lower 40s.

Looking at the long term outlook, it appears another jolt of Arctic air may very well be in the cards for us as we get into February. The GFS paints a COLD shot arriving the 1st thru the 3rd:

The details still have to be ironed out over the next few weeks, but with that being said, all signs are pointing to another significant cold shot for the area. Snow lovers, keep  your fingers crossed…
