Friday Warm Up; Strong Storms Saturday

A relatively cool, dry day is coming to a close, with a much more active pattern in store as we get into the upcoming weekend. Highlights include increasing wind and temperatures Friday, with strong storms possible Saturday.

Warming Trend

Friday morning, a warm front will lift to our north, turning winds out of the south.

At dawn, readings will be very cold, located between the low – mid 30s. This may result in frost on your windshield.

With that being said, temps should climb until they hit their ceiling near the 60˚ mark ~2pm.

The forecast will continue to remain calm through evening, making for picture-perfect conditions for WKU’s home football finale against MTSU. Kickoff temperatures will be around 55˚, with winds out of the south at 5-15 mph.

Wet, Stormy Start to the Weekend

A cold front will approach the area from the northwest on Saturday, as its associated low pressure center moves east across the Great Lakes:

Ahead of the front, winds will intensify out of the south, with gusts hitting 30-35 mph. Scattered rain chances early Saturday will increase as the cold front eventually arrives and passes.

It will be during this time that we could see strong or, perhaps, in isolated cases, severe storms with the primary threat being damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center currently has us outlined in a 1/5 on the severe weather scale:

Widespread severe weather is NOT anticipated. The majority of the region will see gusty rain showers, with total rain amounts ranging between .25″-1″.

Another highlight will be the impressive wind field behind the front, which will turn out of the northwest behind the front. This could make for a long night for our friends at BGMU and WRECC.

Wind speeds are expected to potentially hit 45+ mph, outside of storms. Let it be known that holiday lawn decor, patio furniture and trampolines (aka God’s frisbees) stand the greatest threat during this time.

Cold Shot Follows

Sunday, low clouds will linger, at least through the early part of the day. Winds will continue to filter in out of the northwest, resulting in highs between the low and 40s.

This trend will hold into Monday of Thanksgiving week, however, the good news is temps will rebound to the 50s.

Models are hinting at a dry cold front passing Wednesday, which would set us up for a chilly Thanksgiving + Black Friday. It’s still early, but early signs point toward partly sunny skies, along with temperatures in the 40s to low 50s.
