Wednesday Afternoon Weather Update

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Wednesday, May 11 – Showers & Storms – High 82˚ / Tonight – Showers & Storms – Low 66˚

Good afternoon, Bowling Green! Kentucky saw its fair share of severe storms over the past 24 hours. Check out some of the tweets from Tuesday:

And yet, the Bowling Green bubble stood strong for much of the mess yesterday.

We’ve thankfully seen a break in the rain across the Commonwealth this afternoon, but the moisture is definitely still here! As of this blog post, the dewpoints for Bowling Green are at 70°! For reference, 60° is usually the benchmark for when the air starts to feel a bit “muggy”.

Due to this mugginess, the strong storms aren’t over yet! Another round looks to come through here early tonight, with the potential to be strong or severe. Since it will be swinging through here after dark, it may weaken a bit by the time it reaches us, but some damaging winds are possible.

Southerly flow will keep temperatures warm and dewpoints muggy during the overnight hours.

Thursday, May 12 – Showers & Storms – High 84˚ / Thursday Night – Showers & Storms – Low 57˚

Are you tired of this unsettled weather pattern yet? Because the atmosphere surely isn’t. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the central part of Kentucky, including Bowling Green, in a Slight Risk for severe weather yet again tomorrow.

We’ll be riding the warm front Thursday, with strong southerly winds hiking temperatures back up into the low to mid-80s. While those warm, muggy conditions will be present at the surface, a trough will be making its way eastward in the upper-atmosphere.

With the divergence present aloft, plenty of lift will be available for thunderstorms. Lift is one of the few “ingredients” necessary for thunderstorm development, and severe thunderstorm sustainment.

Some clearing after any morning showers and storms will help prime the atmosphere for severe weather once the surface cold front swings through during the afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and hail are once again possible on Thursday.

Friday, May 13 – Partly Cloudy – High 79˚ / Friday Night – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Rain Chance – Low 60˚

Well, Friday finally looks to be our day. Once showers and storms clear out from the morning, high pressure will begin to build into the area. Skies will clear, conditions will be dry, and temperatures and humidity levels will be lower!
