Rain Returns for Bowling Green

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Wednesday, April 20 – Partly Cloudy- High 80˚ / Tonight – Chance of Rain – Low 60˚

Every day since this past Sunday, we’ve seen high temperatures break the 80° mark here in Bowling Green; that’s about 10° above our climate normal for this time of year.

The consistently dry and warmer-than-average temperatures have been caused by an omega block, which has been mentioned several times in the past few blog posts.

This omega block will begin to weaken, as the upper-atmosphere returns back to its advancing trough/ridge state. We begin the forecast period with the base of the trough containing the upper-level low located over the midwest.

The placement of the trough upstream (to the west) of our area will allow enough lift for precipitation over Bowling Green.

Rain looks as though it should hold off for south central Kentucky until late evening and into the overnight hours today, according to the models. We could possibly see an isolated shower or storm mid-afternoon, so keep your umbrella handy just in case.

Temperatures will creep up towards the 80° mark once again, but may be just a degree or two cooler than the past few days due to the increase in cloud cover and breaking down of the upper-level ridge.

Lows overnight will remain very mild – in the upper-50s/low 60s.

Thursday, April 21 – Showers & Storms – High 73˚ / Thursday Night – Showers & Storms – Low 57˚

Temperatures will drop beginning Thursday, as showers and storms become more widespread. A slow-moving, weak low pressure system at the surface will cause the associated rain to begin to wrap around the pressure center before pushing through more linearly.

This set-up will basically give us a longer span of off-and-on precipitation throughout the day Thursday, with the heaviest rain early to mid-morning. Another low pressure system – this time to our south – will keep us rainy into the night on Thursday.

As far as temperatures go, highs will drop by several degrees on Thursday. Low 70s during the day with upper 50s overnight will still make for pleasant temperatures, even if conditions aren’t dry!

Friday, April 22 – Showers & Storms – High 72˚ / Friday Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 51˚

A low tracking across the deep South will keep us pre-occupied on Friday as well. I hope everyone has enjoyed the warm, dry weather, as rain seems to be a reoccurring theme throughout the second half of the workweek.

Friday 10AM

This low will rotate rain showers through south central Kentucky during the morning and afternoon, with some of the models keeping rain chances around through the late evening. We will keep you up-to-date with the latest timing on this system and what you can expect for your Friday night plans.

The weekend looks pleasant and warm once again, so if you can make it through a few days of rain, the sunshine will be back!
