April Showers Bring May Flowers

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Wednesday, April 6 – Showers & Storms Likely – High 65˚ / Tonight – Rain Likely – Low 45˚

Good morning, Bowling Green! I hope everyone has enjoyed the sunshine over the past few days, because the rest of the workweek does not appear to be so pleasant.

The high pressure center that kept us dry and cool yesterday has made its way eastward, as a low pressure system heads our way from the upper-Midwest.

A low pressure system is also known as a mid-latitude cyclone. I realize I use the term “low pressure system” quite often, so below is a visual representation of the feature at the surface to better explain what I’m describing.

As of this morning, winds at the surface have shifted southerly due to our region being under the influence of the warm front. These southerly winds will allow temperatures to jump into the mid-60s before the cold front sweeps through during the evening. Southerly flow also transports moisture from the Gulf, allowing rain chances to return mid-afternoon and into the overnight hours.

Something significant to point out is the magnitude of the wind that will be in play today. Winds will vary from 15-25 mph throughout the day with wind gusts up to 40 mph possible! The National Weather Service office in Louisville has issued a Wind Advisory until 7 PM CDT, so please exercise caution.

Winds will back off by the early evening, with the majority of the rain off to our east by midnight. Temperatures will drop into the mid-40s overnight.

Thursday, April 7 – Mostly Cloudy; Sct’d Showers – High 61˚ / Thursday Night – Sct’d Showers – Low 41˚

Thursday will give us a brief break from the rain for the first part of the day, but clouds will stick around. A clipper system from the north will dig down and bring rain chances back into the picture late Thursday. The rain that we do receive from this system will be lighter and more scattered than the frontal line moving through Wednesday.

Temperatures Thursday will hit around the 60° mark, with low-40s in the forecast for the overnight hours.

Friday, April 8 – Sct’d Rain Chance – High 55˚ / Friday Night – Sct’d Rain/Mix Chance – Low 32˚

Friday may roll around, but we’re not off the hook just yet. The aforementioned clipper system from the north will receive another shot of energy, allowing precipitation to dip down and cycle around the region off and on, throughout the day.

This rain will be scattered and light, just as it was on Thursday. Bowling Green has the potential at seeing a few snow flurries Friday night as well, due to the cold air in place throughout the atmospheric column. Yes, it is April. But we must all remember that we live in Kentucky, and weather is finicky!

Conditions look as though they will finally clear this weekend, with sunny skies and temperatures back into the low 60s by Sunday. Temperatures will remain below the climate normal, but hopefully the plentiful sunshine will make up for that detail!
