Severe Weather Awareness Day

Severe Weather Awareness Day (commonly known as “SWAD”) took place yesterday at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. The National Weather Service office in Nashville, Tennessee, hosts the event every year around Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

During the event, speakers such as local media, emergency management personnel, and employees of the NWS present on topics to educate and prepare the community for the upcoming severe weather season. This year’s presentations included a basic spotter refresher course, a panel discussion, and a keynote by the respected and adored James Spann.

During the transitions between presentations and lunch, booths hosted by various organizations, news stations, and offices were open for the public to browse and pick up some free “swag”.

WKU Students not only attended some of the sessions, but hosted a booth, visited the NWS office in Nashville, and one student – Pierce Larkin, Wx Or Not contributor – even lead the forecast discussion for the day.

NWS Nashville saw a great turnout at SWAD, and we’re happy we could attend yet again this year! Here’s to hoping an event like this could take place in Bowling Green sometime in the near future.
